Rangers 2 vs. Dundee United 0 Jan. 05 2008

NAI BOTHER

The Gers are once more back where they belong, at the top of the SPL, looking down on all the other second best teams. The New Year has started in a very good vein and with a game in hand to boot things are really looking bright for the Gers.

Walter must have been satisfied by what he saw at Hibs in the last game as he, for one of the few times this season, started with the exact same team. This does look like a very solid set-up which allows the midfield to be very dynamic with Thommo and Bazza being able to push forward and create knowing that Hemdani is the safety net behind them. Once more it was a footballing display rather than a hoof it and see and it proved profitable with another three points in the bag with gears to spare and a place, once more at the summit of the SPL.

The team is starting to show confidence in how it plays football and with a squad to work with that are all fighting for places Rangers are looking strong and are worthy of being named title favourites once more.

Today’s team: -

McGregor: - Didn’t have much in the way of excitement but caught and handled well on a cold wet day.

Rmed Verdict: - 6

Hutton: - Lived up to his credentials with another impressive display that saw good runs forward and a solid defensive display.

Rmed Verdict: - 8

Cuellar: - Proving his importance to the team all the time with a solid defensive display that included good cover for Weir as well. Times his tackles so well.

Rmed Verdict: - 8

Weir: - More settled than he has been in recent weeks and cruised through the game with Cuellar.

Rmed Verdict: - 7

Whittaker: - More attacking in stages today and gave us the appearance of having a left side today. You can still tell that its not his natural side but he’s adapted well.

Rmed Verdict: - 7

Burke: - The right hand side of our team proves to be the outlet and main attacking option time and time again. Burkes pace let’s him get in behind and his crossing was dangerous throughout.

Rmed Verdict: - 8 (MOTM troubled the United back line constantly) :rangers:

Bazza: - Showing signs of finding form. His passing contribution along with Thomson helped carve United open at pace. Having the likes of Naismith and Burke to pick out certainly helps. The goal will help him too.

Rmed Verdict: - 8

Hemdani: - Quietly effective as the calming and controlling influence in midfield. Anyone in a tight spot knew only to look up and he wouldn’t be far away.

Rmed Verdict: - 7

Thommo: - Another fine display in a run of good form. Starting to show a lot more confidence in coming forward and creating probably helped with having Hemdani sitting behind. Never gives up his defensive duties either.

Rmed Verdict: - 8

Naismith: - Once more he started very lively and bagged a good goal but once more he seemed to tire in the second half and was subbed for Novo late on.

Rmed Verdict: - 7

Cousin: - He may not be here too much longer but had another reasonable game. Have the pace and power but his first touch let’s him down quite a bit.

Rmed Verdict: - 7

Novo (On for Naismith): - Good to see the wee man back and hungry. A good attacking option for Smith.

Rmed Verdict: - 4

Boyd (On for Cousin): - Could and should have bagged another goal but had his penalty saved.

Rmed Verdict: - 4

Smith: - Looks to have found a working formation that has a mixture of pace power and flare. Will look back over the course of a year and have a quiet smile to himself at being back top of the league.

Rmed Verdict: - 7

Bragging rights all over the world have just made a drastic u-turn with the Blue of Rangers reclaiming its spot at the head of the SPL table. Title number 52 is now firmly in our sights as we prepare for the second half of the title race.

Another great report Bazza.

I mostly agree with what you said in your report. I think you are maybe a wee bit generous giving Barry an 8, but hey he scored and we are top of the league.

Nice position to be in and we can smile again this year after the tremendous drama of a year ago.

Sounds good. Did we play/try to play a lot of passing football and what reception did Hutton get?

Cheers from the viral flu loyal!!

"THERES ONLY OOOONE ALAN HUTTON, ONLY ONE ALAN HUTTON"

was heard quite alot.

Hemdani or Hutton would have been my choice for MOTM and for timing it would have been Hutton. Burke continues to make so many wrong choices; not making options for Hutton going forward, not making the simple killer pass when he should.Burke has made the team more exciting and direct, a good improvement but needs to keep thinking and working for the team.

I agree with your point about Burke, his decision making really must improve at times. All too often he takes on one man too many or doesn't release the ball early enough or takes on a man when he could play a pass/cross. If he could improve on this he'd be an even better player.
