Gers Boss Walter On His Inspirational Skipper

Jan 6 2008

WALTER SMITH walked into a dressing-room in disarray this time last year - but reckons it was a no brainer handing Barry Ferguson back his captain's armband.

The skipper's removal from office on Ne'erday had sparked Paul Le Guen's downfall. But Smith's first decision as boss was to reinstate the Ibrox favourite as the club's leading man.

He said: "It was the first real situation we had to address - but it wasn't a big problem.

"If something happened between Barry and the previous gaffer - it was THEIR problem.

"For me, Barry should still have been the captain of Rangers. It was easy to make him skipper again.

"And as for influencing the dressing-room? That's what captains should be all about. "When a team aren't doing so well, as captain I expect you to do something in the dressing-room.

"Maybe that was the problem with Paul - perhaps he addressed it differently from other managers.

"But you don't want a skipper to accept being fourth in the SPL, 16 points off the top, and losing to St John stone in a cup."
