Fixture Problems

THE SPL will today try to sort out their fixture probems after being handed another headache with the postponement of last night's St Mirren match.

They have yet to fix a date for the Old Firm derby which was due to be played at Parkhead on January 2. They still have to rearrange Motherwell v Celtic from last weekend and now they have St Mirren v Rangers to fix after Love Street proved to be unplayable.

Dates are difficult to find due to Rangers and Celtic's European and domestic cup commitments but the SPL are hoping to provide a clearer picture.

The Love Street call-off means that Lee McCulloch and Alan Hutton have still to serve their suspensions. McCulloch, who is nursing a calf knock in any case, is now banned from next Wednesday's game at Fir Park against Gretna. Hutton misses Gretna and Inverness on January 20 although he is free to play against East Stirling on Sunday if required.

Do you think there could be a chance that we end up playing say a Saturday lunchtime, then again on a Monday night, before a Thursday home game in Europe for one of those fixtures (say the rearranged St Mirren game), bearing in mind that sometimes over the festivities we are expected to play many games in a short space of time?

I was thinking that was one of the options either that or the international weekend will have to be cancelled, just to accommodate the SPL games. Or could the game be played on the reserve day for the cup, for replays assuming both us and the Sts get thorugh first time this weekend?

There could be a further problem on the horizon, our game against Gretna next week. Fir Park is notorious for having games postponed at this time of year due to water making the pitch into a bog.

Luckily Motherwell and Gretna are away from home on saturday so this will save the pitch a bit.

this is a farce of a situation...if they had just done the right thing and played the Old Firm game and properly respected Phil O'Donnel they wouldnt have such a big problem as they do now.

the SPL is a joke

Indeed. Iain Blair (I think it was) said the Old Firm game was postponed "as a mark of respect" to Phil O'Donnel, yet a couple of days later he said "the other 3 games will go ahead - as a mark of respect to Phil O'Donnel". Erm, right. The SPL are clueless.
