Davey_RFC 122
RANGERS CLOSE IN ON MENDES Portsmouth have accepted an offer from Rangers in the region of £3m for midfielder Pedro Mendes. The 29-year-old Portuguese travelled to Glasgow on Friday to discuss personal terms with the Ibrox club. "He's very good technically and I hope he will come and improve us," said Rangers manager Walter Smith. "He is a really good all-round midfield player. "He can get a goal or two as well, so if all goes well, he will be a good acquisition for us." Twice capped for Portugal, Mendes moved to Fratton Park from Tottenham in January 2006, having previously been with Porto. Rangers are short of options in central midfield, with skipper Barry Ferguson currently sidelined by injury. The Glasgow club have money to spend following the £7.8m departure of Carlos Cuellar to Aston Villa. A bid to capture Glenn Loovens from Cardiff appears to have been thwarted by Old Firm rivals Celtic, who are now favourites to sign the Dutch defender. And the move for Mendes may cool their interest in Fulham's Steven Davis. The Northern Ireland midfielder enjoyed a successful loan spell at Ibrox last season but the clubs have been unable to reach a transfer agreement. Spanish winger Aaron Niguez Esclapez arrived at Ibrox on a two-year loan deal from Valencia this week. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/t...ers/7563028.stm

Tommy WATP 86
Mendes Signs For Gers RANGERS can confirm today that Portuguese midfielder Pedro Mendes has signed for the club for £3m in a three year deal. Pedro MendesThe experienced playmaker successfully completed a medical in Glasgow this afternoon before putting pen-to-paper on his new contract at Murray Park. The capture of Mendes is a huge boost for boss Walter Smith who has been looking for a creative midfielder to bolster his squad in the absence of captain Barry Ferguson. The 29-year-old certainly provides that and his ability to push forward and provide goalscoring opportunities is sure to be an important factor for Rangers this season. Mendes started his career with FC Guimaraes and was to stay at the club for four seasons before moving to Portuguese giants FC Porto where he won the Champions League under the guidance of Jose Mourinho. In the summer of 2004 he signed for Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur before joining Portsmouth where he was described as 'the man with the big heart' due to his tireless and passionate displays. During his time at Fratton Park he played 58 games, scoring five goals, and was part of the team that win the FA Cup against Cardiff City in May 2008. Mendes was also involved in last weekend's Charity Shield clash against Manchester United and will be included in Walter Smith's squad for tomorrow's SPL clash with Hearts.
