Rangers go for £1m Healy

Wednesday, 7 January 2009

Rangers are thought to be close to signing David Healy from Sunderland

David Healy’s £1m move to Rangers was a step closer last night after the Glasgow giants admitted they were willing to cash in on their top scorer Kris Boyd.

The Ibrox club turned down a £3m offer for goal machine Boyd from English Championship club Birmingham City but they are expected to make an improved offer for the Scottish star in the coming days.

Boyd is understood to be keen on the move to St Andrews where he would team up with his former Rangers and Scotland boss, Alex McLeish.

Gers chairman David Murray is prepared to do business providing the price is right and boss Walter Smith last week admitted that every player had their price.

With Boyd seemingly heading for the exit door despite bagging 20 goals already this season, moves are afoot to bring Northern Ireland talisman Healy to Scotland.

The Belfast Telegraph revealed last week that the Sunderland hitman was being lined up for a loan move to the Light Blues but with Boyd’s imminent departure, the deal is now more likely to be a permanent one.

If Healy does sign on the dotted line for his boyhood heroes, he will make it a hat-trick of Northern Ireland stars at the Teddy Bears with Steven Davis and

Kyle Lafferty already in the squad.

Healy’s partnership with Lafferty could be the key to the move as they have already shown numerous occasions at international level they can score goals as a front pairing.

Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington angered Healy last year when he stated the record goal-scorer leave Sunderland to get first-team football for the good of his international career and a move to Rangers would certainly please all concerned.

As of last night Rangers had not been in contact with Sunderland or Healy but once the Boyd deal goes through communication between all parties will be on the cards.

KRIS BOYD is expected to complete a £3.5 million switch from Rangers to Birmingham City today.

A deal was agreed last night and the striker will now be taken under the wing of Alex McLeish, the manager who signed him for Rangers from Kilmarnock in 2006.

Rangers hope to replace the man who has been their leading scorer for three consecutive seasons with Northern Ireland internationalist David Healy from Sunderland in a £1 million deal.

Boyd has rattled in 91 goals in his three years at Ibrox – including two in the 3-0 weekend win over Inverness Caley Thistle at the weekend. His goalscoring exploits at Ibrox earned him an international call-up, and he won most of his 15 caps when McLeish was Scotland manager.

Rangers rejected an initial bid of around £3 million for the 25-year-old from the Coca-Cola Championship club, but chairman Sir David Murray showed the club's hand when he went on record yesterday to confirm that a suitably improved offer would be accepted.

Sir David told the BBC yesterday afternoon: "Birmingham have made an enquiry. We rejected a bid of around £3 million but if they improve it, we'll allow them to speak to Kris Boyd."

Boyd has netted 20 goals this term from a total of 20 starts and three substitute appearances. He will team up with Scotland team-mates Garry O'Connor, James McFadden and Nigel Quashie at Birmingham City.

Healy set a Northern Ireland scoring record when he netted against Denmark in last year's European Championship qualifiers – his 13th in the tournament – and has scored 35 goals for his country.

He was signed by Roy Keane for Sunderland from Fulham for £1.2 million in the summer, but failed to settle at the Stadium of Light. The 29-year-old has dropped out of the first-team picture and Walter Smith has moved swiftly to bring him in as Boyd's replacement.

Boyd could become the second striker to leave Ibrox for the Midlands this week after Alan Gow's agent revealed his client had reached a deal with Wolves.

The 26-year-old has been in talks with the Championship leaders since Rangers accepted an offer at the weekend.

"He has agreed a two-and-a-half-year deal and the move will be completed pending a medical later this week," said Phil McTaggart. "Alan has been impressed by the ambition of Wolves and is hoping to help them in their bid to win promotion to the Premier League."

Gow played just two games for Rangers – both cup ties against lower league opposition – after joining them from Falkirk on a free transfer in 2007.

However, he scored five goals in 17 matches in a successful loan spell at Blackpool this season, and Wolves manager Mick McCarthy moved quickly to secure him.

As much as I don't rate Boyd as an all round player - you dont sell him for £3-4m and replace him with £1m David Healy - a guy who has a worse scoring record than Kenny fcuking Miller.

A quick buck aye - fuck off Murray.

to be honest, i think healy could do a decent job for us, he is surely a better buy at 1mill than velicka- having said that,he should never be seen as a replacement for boyd, i am dismayed at what is happening to this club...the sad thing is, by selling boyd and another 1 or two, we might balance the books this season, but we effectively hand the title to the scum meaning we again have to qualify through group stages...its a vicious cycle, one that we can only help break by winning the title and getting the automatic champions league money

david healy dont know if he will be a good singning but hopefully he is

another wee northan irish guy to go with davis and lafferty maybe play lafferty and healy up together quality

if we get him for 1m thats good business

No it's not.

Just because he's 'northan irish' doesn't mean he's good for Rangers. Stupid transfer by Rangers, however I'd love to be proven otherwise.

Odd thing about Healy is I remember so many here praising him in the past. When he scored Norn Iron's winner V England.

Fulham were in for him, etc.

And we were gutted that we weren't taking an interest.

Now it's pure apathy.

Looking at his career though and quite frankly we could do a lot worse than a decent Premiership striker.

Just the usual RM flip, flop, <cr>

Are people forgetting that he became the top goalscorer for a Euro Qualifier in history?

That he has scored against the best defenders in the world ?

That when he was at Leeds he was played on the wing ? <_< Don't even think about it Wattie!

Ok I have just changed my mind, if we are signing Healy it should be to partner Boyd not to effin replace him :angry2:
