Motherwell are in talks with Czech Second Division side FK SIAD Most about a deal to take defender Byron Webster on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old former York player has impressed Fir Park manager Mark McGhee during a trial period.

"They want a fee for him and we are not in a position to pay a fee, and we don't yet know whether we are entitled to pay a fee," McGhee explained.

McGhee also hopes a new deal can be struck with goalkeeper Graeme Smith.

The 25-year-old former Rangers custodian has held initial talks over extending his contract beyond the summer, but is keeping his options open.

And McGhee moved to snap up Michael Fraser from Inverness on a pre-contract agreement earlier this week.

"We're going to run with two full-time goalkeepers next season, if Graeme Smith re-signs," said the manager.

"If he doesn't, Michael Fraser will step in and we will then look for cover.

"But we are still very hopeful that Graeme will decide he should be here a bit longer and then we will have two really good goalkeepers instead of looking for a loan."
