Walter's biggest test

When king Kevin Thomson returns from injury, Walter Smith faces one of the biggest managerial decisions of his career.

He'll have five (supposedly) top-class central midfielders, from which he has to pick two.

Who does he pick? Thomson has emerged, in his absence, as one of our most important players. Mendes has undoubted class, Edu has impressed when played and while Davis will probably continue to fill that right-mid position, the big question will be over Ferguson.

Amid the speculation over a new contract, where does he stand? We were unbeaten after 8 games this year with the Thomson/Mendes partnership and we played some excellent stuff during that time.

Since Thomson's injury, we've dropped points in 7 separate games, often played awfully and that's simply not good enough.

It's a massive decision for Walter, but one that he's paid to make.

We have to consider that Thomson won't be match fit straight away, and i HOPE he comes back in form, chances are he'll need to get back in the flow again.

Didn't have any problem throwing Ferguson or McGregor in straight after injury, why wouldn't he with Thomson?

And neither came back in good form straight away, or ever in Fergies case.

It should be Mendes and Thomson but we can't rule out the possibility that at least one of them may go for a decent transfer fee.

Davis is out of the equation i think, he should be given a chance in his natural position but i think Smith is determined to just use him on the right.

What do you mean the case still stands?

I was just saying we can't expect him to be match fit and as good as he was straight away, i didn't say he shouldn't be played?

Hopefully Smith isn't here because he'll probably go - Davis__Ferguson__Mendes__Thomson.

Personally, I'd play 4-5-1, bin the likes of Boyd, Miller, Ferguson, McCulloch....and bring in two quality wide men and a good striker, which the club clearly lacks!

Two full backs and we have a deal.

That midfield you've put up there looks absolutely horrendous, even worse when you think that Broadfoot and Papac would be expected to provide width.

We need a LB, RB, CB, RM/W, LM/W and at least one ST. That's without anyone leaving!

But hey, £7m on three strikers looks a better deal to me :pipe:

Keep Boyd and bring in a centre half and two natural full backs.

Mendes wasn't any better than Ferguson yesterday, both were poor. The Barry of a few years ago would have burst the net with Lafferty's knock down.

I'm not basing it on yesterday.

I'm basing it on this season, and so far, Mendes has been our best player.

If Smith is still around, he'll stick with ferguson: his faith in him allowed him to be brought up to match fitness/sharpness in first team games, which is staggering in the extreme. With that as a bench mark it would suggest ferguson will be played no matter what his condition/form and what ever other player options are available.

Ferguson NEEDS to be dropped. I just don't understand what it is he actually does...Or is meant to be doing.

When we broke yesterday on the counter, I noticed Barry at the half way line, running towards the Celtic end. Instead of continuining his run, he stops, tracks back for Mendes to pass it 3 yards and him to pass it back. Completely pointless.

He seems to just try and not fuck up and thats it. And yet he still does it.

I know that mate-it was just an observation on yesterday's game.We needed a bit of craft from Mendes but the game passed him by.

It did, but he's having to try and do the work of two men.
