blyth Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/clubfoot...id=1014974.html This is a really interesting move by the KNVB, they have laid down a 3 year rule that states if clubs are not financially secure in 3 years time, then they will have their licences cancelled. This has led to the chairmen of Roda and Fortuna deciding to merge, and one of said chairmen has apparently received death threats. He may even have resigned, I'm a bit sketchy on the details just now. Under the agreement, Fortuna Sittard's 13,000 stadium is going to be the training complex/academy and Roda's will be the stadium for matchday. They also hope to boost their finances quite significantly too. It seems a risky move but if they didn't do it, it's likely they would both go out of business. Fair play to both clubs, I say. Hope it works out.
Jimfanciesthedude Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 SFA take note get rid of all they 300 home crowd fucking teams from 1st division downwards imagine scotland with only 20 professional clubs, would easily be sustainable with our limited population
Fiogh Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 We should try something similar. Merge wi the tims?
MisterC Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I think some Scottish clubs will have to bit the bellet and merge-or simply die out. The amount of clubs we have is not sustanable and especially in areas where there are a few clubs within a few miles of each other. Clyde, Airdrie and Albion Rovers are within what 6 or 7 miles of each other wiuth the latter 2, 3 miles apart. Does not make sense imho....
Mike Newells Sexist Army Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 No clubs should ever merge unless it's what the fans want, but these kind of financial regulations will need to be brought in everywhere at some point. The Bundesliga and Ligue 1 in France employ similar schemes. Interesting to note the Dutch are also opening up the league system as well, there will be promotion and relegation to and from the league below the Eredivisse for the first time in the next few years. This is definitely something Scotland should be looking at as a few posters have already said the current situation in Scotland is not viable in the long term, 2 leagues of 16 and regional leagues below with the ability to be promoted and relegated from them instead of clubs having to be voted in or out of the league system is the way to go. I have a Fortuna Sittard pennant my dad picked up from somewhere following Rangers about Europe, must be horrible for the fans.
