Boab Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Paddy Power is paying out on Manchester United as winners of the Premier League, FA Cup and Carling Cup - the first time any bookie has paid out early on a team winning more than one trophy in a season. With United's goal impregnable in their last 14 league games and Arsene Wenger's admission that the champions are 'untouchable' Paddy Power is not only declaring the title race over but all domestic trophies for this season. The bookie will pay out on all bets on United winning the three domestic trophies as well as any bets on the domestic doubles and the treble. United are already just 1/6 to retain their title, 2/5 for the Carling Cup and 7/4 for the FA Cup, with Paddy Power looking at an early payout of over £1 million. Paddy Power, head of communications for the bookie, said: "We know and punters know the race for trophies is all but over for another year so why wait for the formalities? "If none of the opposition are able to even score a goal against United what chance have they got of actually beating them to silverware? We just hope someone can do us a favour and stop them in Europe. "However, paying out on all three is a gamble. Football has a way of biting teams on the backside when they least expect it so we could yet end up with egg on our faces and not for the first time. "Paddy Power are famous for being the first to call title races over, even paying out on Chelsea after just seven games of the 2005/06 season. But we haven't always got it right, famously paying out on Arsenal in the 2002/2003 season only to have to pay out again when Manchester United pipped them to the title." Paddy Power are also waiting on the outcome of this season's relegation fight having paid out on Stoke, currently 2/1 on for the drop, after their loss on the first day of the season. http://msn.football365.com/story/0,17033,8...4942836,00.html
Guest Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 absolutely fucking crazy. I mean the league i would say fair enough. But the other i can see them getting put out. As they play a young team and once they play a good premier league team i think they might go out.
DinViesel Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 I'm not a gambler so probably a stupid question but what exactly does the bookie gain by paying out early?
Jimbo. Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 I'm not a gambler so probably a stupid question but what exactly does the bookie gain by paying out early? Publicity. It's a measured gamble.
Gazzas_Flute Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 On Ladbrokes you can get 12/1 on them winning Premier League / FA Cup / Carling Cup / Champions League or 3/1 on them winning Premier League / FA Cup / Carling Cup
rangers4eva Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Cheers for that... you are not the centre of the universe pleb
rangers4eva Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 I'm not a gambler so probably a stupid question but what exactly does the bookie gain by paying out early? They stop taking bets on that selection so can't lose any more if utd do win the treble, they'll get their name in the papers, a mention on the news, so probably a bit more traffic to their site.
HighlandBear Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Paddy power do this kinda thing year in year out, well mibbe not to the treble, but usually have paid out on one league or another by now, all good PR and free advertisement for them. Had they not paid out on ra sellik the helicopter sunday season? They aint stupid, they wouldnt do this, if they were gonna lose out in the long run.
Boab Posted February 20, 2009 Author Posted February 20, 2009 On Ladbrokes you can get 12/1 on them winning Premier League / FA Cup / Carling Cup / Champions League or 3/1 on them winning Premier League / FA Cup / Carling Cup Quite a few different places have it as 14.
DinViesel Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Cheers for that... you are not the centre of the universe pleb Never implied that I was, just pointing out how stupid and uninformative your post was. If you had nothing to add or couldn't answer the question in real life would you pop your head in, roll your eyes then fuck off again? Didn't think so.
simplythebest Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 I think they'll win the Premiership and Carling Cup for sure, the FA Cup not as convinced yet. Arsenal and Chelsea are still in it and that could be their best chance of a trophy, plus you can't rule out Everton.
macleod1873 Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 I really dont understand this. Whats the fucking point a mean whats the problem with waitng til the nd of the season to pay out. If man u go on a horrendus run and end up shit creek then the tittle will be wide open Where s the business sense in this?
HighlandBear Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 I really dont understand this. Whats the fucking point a mean whats the problem with waitng til the nd of the season to pay out. If man u go on a horrendus run and end up shit creek then the tittle will be wide open Where s the business sense in this? Professional gamblers will just about always only bet big on sure things. So say Man U are in to 1/5(or even 1/10 on for the league, several pro gamblers would look to bet 1mill plus on that for a return of 200k profit(100k for the 1/10)..Most of the pre season taken bets shall be smaller. with them paying out on this, they will not take any more bets on the EPL now, so that in essence will mean, no more big loss chances, than they have already accounted for. Plus free advertising & very good PR. They seem to think manure have it wrapped up, and are not prepared to take any more bets on it, so will know exactly what the pay outs will be.. They will not be down, regardless. A lot of money probably made off bets of the likes of Chels, Pool & Arsenal possibly helps this decision. Thats what it looks like to me anyways, i could be wrong, and am sure their will be other reason's also, that make this beneficial to them.
Rohan Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 The people they pay out are most probbaly just going to re-bet their money aswell. Which just increases their income.
Youllneverwinaway Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 The people they pay out are most probbaly just going to re-bet their money aswell. Which just increases their income. BINGO Rohan has given the factual answer. By paying out early, the winners will reinvest some of that money in between now and May meaning its a calculated gamble by PP.
