  2. I did ask earlier on in the thread Markinch for more information and if this was only being circulated on certain message boards as many bears don't know anything about it.

Apologies for not answering your question earlier. I am not an organiser of this and was only asked if i would post the details on this board and as such cannot say for certain every board the details have been posted. If you want to post the details on another board then that would be excellent.

What the guys organising this want to do is raise the memorial so it can be seeen and have it refurbished, plant some trees and flowers in that area. They also plan to have a bench in their memory in the local church and also im sure that the secondery schools the boys attended have been contacted with the view of giving them a shield and cups for their football and netball teams to compete for again in the boys memory.

I'm sure i did say somewhere earlier in the thread that the guys post on FF but its something independent they are doing themselves as one of the guys is from the same area as the boys and not a FF project in anyway at all.

  3. Just a wee update guys, the current total is £1697.66 and there is still money to be added for signed/framed tops that have been auctioned and from the donation fund total itself. the amount needed should be about £3k and as ive said before all extra money after everything has been done will be donated to CHAS.

Many Thanks for all donations made .

  4. There is also going to be a Race night too to raise funds and details for this are as follows;

In line with our fund raising for the Markinch Boys who never returned home on Jan2nd 1971 we will be holding a race night on Sat 5th June at the Station Hotel in Leslie, tickets are £2 and there will be a sash bash after the racing. Mr Delmonte will host the evening and we will have a few ex players present as well as a rep from the Davie Cooper charity.

All donations have been appreciated. We are hoping to sell the horses on here at £2 a go and the winner will receive a bottle of spirits. The locals in fife will also be buying up but hopefully we can sell them the jockeys and raise even more cash. pm or post the name of your horse and donate your £2 here http://tinyurl.com/yj9lg2j

Thanks in advance. .... Any group persons wanting to sponsor a race please let me know and i'll pass details to one of the organisers.

  5. I wonder if any Supporters clubs fancies making a small donation to the Markinch Memorial fund? Every donation counts so even a small donation would be most welcome...Thankyou

would anyone like to donate even a pound to the Markinch fund in memory of the Markinch 5 lads that died in the Ibrox disaster

The following objectives are what is hoped to be achieved by the project.

    1. To restore the original stone. ie re letter the memorial and also clean up not only the stone but the immediate area where the stone is located.

    2. To actually raise the stone and put it on a stone plinth of say 3 feet high and put the lads names on the plinth , therefore making the stone stand out a bit more. The hope is to enhance what is originally there and not detract from the original memorial.

3 To locate a Park bench in the local church grounds where three of the lads funerals were held. The bench will also have a memorial plaque placed on it.

    4. To plant 5 trees with each of the lads names on each tree, either in the churchyard or the cemetry where they are burried.

    5. Perhaps present the school they went to with 5 trophies each bearing their names . ie the Peter Easton memorial trophy

Alongside the Markinch project it is also hoped to do something to preserve the memory of the disasters youngest victim, Nigel Patrick Pickup Aged 9 from Liverpool.

    For Nigel Pickup in Liverpool

A trophy for his school bearing the name The Nigel Pickup Memorial trophy and perhaps a memorial plaque for his school too

  6. excuse my ignorance but what happened?

    :anguish:

    Bump.

What's the need for this shite?

I was asking a serious question as i had never been told of the markinch 5.

Im 18 years old and wasn't around at the time but i'm wanting to know about it, what is wrong with that exactly?

I assumed every rangers fan had heard of the Ibrox disaster but now you do know about it im sure you would like to donate even a pound to the cause.

  7. the Ibrox disaster is what happened. these five boys all played for the same youth team and were mates and all went to watch their heroes and never came home.

The burgh of Markinch, in Fife, was hardest hit by the tragedy. Five boys, all between the ages of 13 and 15, ardent Rangers fans who played on the same youth football team, also lost their lives.

Elizabeth McKim was watching the exodus of fans from her third-storey home on Cairnlea Drive when the death scene played before her. She told The Scotsman:

"I saw the fans coming over the top of the terracing and going down the staircase. Then there was a roar and these fans tried to get back up. Suddenly the whole mass of people began swaying. I could hardly watch because I had seen it before and I knew what was going to happen. Within seconds people were tumbling down the stairway. All you could see was arms and legs. I could see that the barriers had been twisted and bent."
