Jelavic On His Way
by Lindsay Herron
THE INCREDIBLE Nikica Jelavic transfer saga is set for a happy ending tomorrow with the Croatian striker poised to become Walter Smith's third summer signing.
Jelavic will arrive at Murray Park for a medical and to conclude personal terms after Rangers finally reached agreement with Rapid Vienna today.
The deal has swung one way then the other in the past couple of weeks with Rangers thinking they had an agreement in place only for the situation to change.
However, the 24-year-old hitman is now on his way after forcing the issue with the Austrian side and all things being equal will beocme a Rangers player tomorrow.
Chief Executive Martin Bain told rangers.co.uk: "We have agreed a fee with Rapid for Nikica Jelavic and we have also agreed personal terms in principle.
"He will arrive tomorrow when we will hope to complete these and when he will also undergo a medical."
Jelavic's arrival will add to the loan capture of exciting Slovakian winger Vladimir Weiss earlier today and the signing of experienced English striker James Beattie six days ago.
He was due to play to Rapid tonight against Aston Villa in the play-off round of the Europa League but was left out of the side.

Rangers will spend yet another day on Tuesday waiting on an answer from Nikica Jelavic over the striker’s proposed move from Rapid Vienna. The two clubs, who had engaged in prolonged bartering over the value of the Croatian, have settled on a fee for the transfer to take place.
But, as STV Sport revealed on Monday night, Jelavic is stalling over making the move to the SPL because of his desire to receive a cash settlement he says he is owed by Rapid before he leaves the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium.
Personal terms have been offered to the 24-year-old, who is believed to be subject of a structured bid in the region of £4.2 million from Rangers. But Jelavic is yet to give a firm answer on whether he feels the package is satisfactory to him, while also pursuing his current employers.
Rangers boss Walter Smith is known to be eager to bring Jelavic to Ibrox at the earliest opportunity and will no doubt be left frustrated by the latest developments, as he prepares his team for their SPL opener against Kilmarnock on Saturday.
Provided he settles with Rapid Vienna, Jelavic will arrive in Glasgow match fit, having featured eight times in league and Europa League games this season. He would also arrive in goal scoring form, having hit the net six times so far. Last campaign, he was on target 18 times on league business and also netted nine times in Europe.
Despite the excitement surrounding his move from Rangers fans, quotes in one newspaper on Tuesday may make it tricky for Jelavic to endear himself. According to the Daily Record, the player has spoken of his desire to move to Scotland but has admitted he wants to use his time in the SPL as a progressive step towards moving south of the border.
“The Scottish league is stronger than the Austrian league and Rangers are a great club,” Jelavic told the paper. “But I've always been honest and I've never hidden my desire to one day play in the English Premier League because it is the best in the world.
“At this moment I remain a Rapid Vienna player and a professional. I want to do the very best I can for this club until someone tells me otherwise. That's all I can say at this time.”

Andrew Dickson reports from the Sydney Football Stadium
STEVEN WHITTAKER has overcome a hamstring strain to take his place in Rangers' starting XI for tonight's meeting with Sydney FC.
The former Hibernian defender replaces Madjid Bougherra, who is rested after appearing as a right-back against Blackburn on Sunday.
Whittaker's introduction to the team is one of two changes to the side which beat Rovers 2-1 courtesy of goals from Mo Edu and Kenny Miller.
Neil Alexander also comes in to make his first appearance of pre-season for the Light Blues after he suffered a minor calf injury last week.
Manager Walter Smith is sticking with the 4-1-4-1 formation he used three days ago in Gers' second game at the Sydney Fesitval of Football.
That means Lee McCulloch will continue as a sitting midfielder, with Edu and Steven Davis paired just in front of him and Miller playing up front himself.
Kyle Lafferty and Steven Naismith will offer support from the flanks, with Whittaker joined by Andy Webster, David Weir and Kirk Broadfoot in defence.
