  1. To be fair Kernaghan is an 'unusual' ROI international being a Protestant who was brought up in Northern Ireland.

Anyway, if he's good enough, if he's committed enough, if he wants what we want, I'd have him, but if he's not all of those things I wouldn't want him near the place.

    That's interesting - I didn't know that.

How come he played for the Republic?

norn iron wouldn't have him because he'd grown up in england so charlton snapped him up for roi

    Cheers.

I know Paul McGrath was a protestant - any others that have played for the Republic?

McGrath isn't, well his father might have been but his mother wasn't. He is often thought to be Protestant because he spent much of his childhood in a home run by the Church of Ireland.

Kernaghan was born in England so he couldn't play for Northern Ireland despite growing up there, a bit like Andrew Drivers at Hearts.

  2. Fulham struggled and changed manager and Healy was deemed surplus to requirements and sold to Sunderland where he has often struggled to even get on the bench. However Sunderland are another team with managerial difficulties.

One of the main reasons that Fulham struggled was because Sanchez tried to take his Northern Ireland blueprint and apply it to Fulham.

Healy showed that he was totally out of his depth at that level and thats one of the main reasons that they found themselves in a relegation battle for the majority of last season.

Unfair. Fulham are perennial relegation fighters, Coleman was brought in to save them from relegation, he did, got a few seasons then was sacked and Sanchez was brought into save them from relegation, he did, got 6 months and was sacked and Hodgson was brought in to save them from relegation, he did..........

No player has prospered at Fulham since Tigana left and with a lunatic owning the club no manager will either. You can't judge anyone on 6 months at Fulham.

  3. Healy started at Man U where he didn't really make it into the 1st team, no real stigma in that. He moved to Preston in the Championship where he showed much promise, his all round play, touch and movement suggested Man U might have made a mistake. He did well at Preston but lost his way for a season and ended up out on loan at Norwich which didn't work out well and he returned to Preston where he again showed the promise he had done before.

He moved to Leeds and was both popular and successful there until the club went into receivership and he then moved up to the EPL with Fulham. Fulham struggled and changed manager and Healy was deemed surplus to requirements and sold to Sunderland where he has often struggled to even get on the bench. However Sunderland are another team with managerial difficulties.

His club career has been mixed however you have to factor in the turmoil at clubs he has played for, both Fulham and Sunderland saw managerial changes shortly after he joined and Leeds had all sorts of off field troubles.

Ultimately his international record suggests ability, and the last striker we bought from Sunderland (who some of us weren't keen on for a while either!) did OK. Give the boy a chance he's better than he's being portrayed here.

  4. Yes but what evidence is there that he is hindering anything?

The fact he hasn't been as good as he can be still leaves him better than almost everyone else in the league.

The evidence is on the park.

Ferguson playing at his best is one of the finest midfielders in Britain. However bar a few performances he's not been producing since the McLeish era. At the moment he is, in many fans eyes, not part of our strongest XI, yet will always be one of the first names on the team sheet. Indeed many believe Ferguson to be only the 4th or even 5th best central midfielder in our current squad. Certainly from evidence over the past 12mths, I'd be inclined to agree that Davis, Thomson and Mendes have all been better performers than Ferguson.

You're harsh on Ferguson, what is he doing wrong just now for you?

I've seen little of Davis at central midfield to judge him there, Thomson is out long term so the point is moot but I'd question his influence week in week out and Mendes is clearly the most gifted player at the club, a player capable of exquisite football but he is not producing enough every week, yet, he could do more I think. Beyond that Hemdani seems finished, Edu it appears isn't ready, Adam is untried in that position but he hasn't looked consistent enough to claim a place for me. I mean if a better player is available and can join the club then fair enough but until then we'd be wrong to drop him in my opinion.

  5. Yes but what evidence is there that he is hindering anything?

The fact he hasn't been as good as he can be still leaves him better than almost everyone else in the league.

Please tell me what Ferguson what brings to the present Rangers team, I think I'm not alone thinking that his time is definietly up. After all he is captain and should be doing more than just a basic midfield job, leading by example for instance.

Well experience for one which is something that shouldn’t be underestimated, he also dictates the tempo of Rangers play, he is a natural centre midfielder, he rarely gives away fouls or bookings, he never gives away possession he has a range of passing that few in our game can equal and the ability to hold the ball up or release it early. I mean I assume your point is that you don’t feel he is playing well just now, I agree, I just think too much is made of this, ignoring others who are equally culpable. Mendes has become a sacred cow this despite some very lacklustre performances recently. Ferguson isn’t playing as well as he can, that doesn’t mean he is playing as badly as some think he is and it certainly doesn’t merit the kind of criticism he is getting on this thread.

  6. That's a common held belief I'm just not sure it is accurate and I'm far from convinced we have adequate cover to play his position. Hearts at tynecastle played better than us and bullied us in midfield, something I don't think would have happened too Ferguson 5 years ago but beyond that the problem with our midfield has been the insistence on playing players in it who are out of position, that isn't Fergoson's fault.

The team played badly against Celtc but it is Ferguson who takes most of the criticism (by the way who played Boyd through for his 1-on-1 with Boruc?). He played OK yesterday, not brilliantly and not as well as he can but OK. I think Ferguson is judged by harder standards than others particularly Mendes and Davis who were also poor in the OF game in particular.

  7. A £2 mil plus bid for a 30 year old in a position we have cover for is good business and should be considered seriously, however some of the criticism Ferguson is getting on this thread is unfair. His form has been poor since returning from injury but so has Mendes and Davis form yet I rarely read criticism of them. Some equate these happenings despite their being no evidence, we lost to both Kaunus and St Mirren without Ferguson in the team and drew at Pittodrie as well as struggling against both Motherwell and Kilmarnock at home. Why would selling Ferguson improve this? I’m not some one-eyed Barry lover, far from it, however to suggest he hasn’t given a lot to our club over the years is disingenuous, his star might well be on the wane but properly managed he is still the best player in our squad.

  8. Yes but none of the teams you mention have made any impact on English football for a generation or more which was my point. Even if you factor in larger 'visiting supports' boosting attendances they are still a long way from achieving anything that could be called success when compared to Man U.

AFC Wimbledon are different, their team was literally taken from them, moved 100 miles away and renamed. I have nothing but admiration for them and wish them every success. AFC Wimbledon have been backed by their local council after much lobbying and that is why they have managed to locate a ground. Their example is one worth studying for all football clubs, they mobilised and became a political force in the borough until the point it became politically expedient for the local councillors to help them rather than put obstacles in their way which is what had been happening prior.

The current economic climate may well help FCUM locate and purchase a ground mind as property prices plummet.

  9. To say FCUM have been a success is only looking at the partial picture. For a start they have a much larger fan base than their opposition, bigger crowds and more money give them a clear advantage over other non-league teams. They have no ground of their own which will be an issue for them in the future. Realistically if they were to reach the senior league they would encounter real opposition from other Man U fans, some of who currently support their cause but not their team, some of who are indifferent towards them and some of who are openly hostile to them. Also while crowds of 7,000 odd are good in non-league they aren't big enough in league 2 or above to make an impact.

They certainly have ideals and I think in theory I support them, Liverpool fans formed a similar club, AFC Liverpool, in the summer too. However breakaway clubs is the road to madness, we are not anywhere near that point yet.

The comment about Ferguson hating them is spot on.

In reality if about 1,000 Rangers fans organised themselves and each put in £500 they could take over just about any club in Scotland with the exception of about 6 or 7. In reality a 'fans club' could be playing in the SPL next season if the will was really there.

  10. Edu was a stupid expensive signing, unseen by the management.

He has played 1 season in what I consider a very poor standard league. Probably like most US players good technically but just not able to transfer this into playing games at a reasonably pacy competitive level. Tha games he played he was tidy doing simple things but looked shocked at the movement of his opposition and did not appear to know what to do.

He has struggled even at reserve level, by his own admission, because of the pace and aggression in which even these games are played.

I do not think we would expect a player who played a season in scottish division one to come into our team and successfully play an important role unless he had proved he was an exceptional talent, which Edu had not done.

So maybe he is another expensive player bought for potential to be moulded by our coaching staff or just yet another bad piece of business?

    Only time will tell.

I spoke with a Canadian who said a large number of eyebrows were raised over his signing in Toronto. Not because he wasn't good enough, they all thought he was and would be a success at Rangers but because of the timing of his move. He was seen as being one of the better players in the team, the Toronto team were struggling and selling him made no sense to them. The club didn't get that much money as the set-up there means the league own the player and they get a sizeable percentage of the fee so it was unlikely that pressure was being put on the manager to 'balance the books' and sell one of his best players.

Which, with his appearance record so far, does make the question; just why did we sign Mo Edu? seem more and more relevant.

  11. The Barca system isn't that different to a PLC system in reality, the main difference being one person can't 'own' the club but they can still control it. The PLC system does allow for multiple ownership where 'shareholders' have their say, appoint a board etc. Without wanting to start a 'SDM is the problem' thread if a large enough group of supporters could raise the money and SDM agreed to sell them the club you would basically have that system. 50,000 fans each contribute £200 you have an offer SDM would have difficulty ignoring, and in the theory the club owned by the fans.

Easier said than done I accept.

The structure of clubs in Germany is similar to the Barca model and many observers feel this has inhibited German clubs competing in the Champions League due the greater resources of the the English and Italian clubs and their ability to raise money from outside sources.

It boils down to what kind of 'club' you want; a club the represents you, your sporting beliefs, ideals and that one day your son might realistically play for, or a club that competes at latter stage Champions League level. It is becoming increasingly difficult to have both.

  12. I think you'll have to wait and see if the Celtc support boo Strachan from the bus on Saturday, chant McGeadys name all through the match and then boo Strachan after it and if Scott McDonald makes a gesture of support for McGeady in a nice public way. If that happens then we can start making comparisons. But if Celtc don't win their next 2 games it just might you know.

  13. Why the dislike of Ince?

I think it is sad when a young manager who starts in the lower leagues, does well and gets a chance in the EPL isn't given more than 4 months, I mean they are on a bad run but it isn't like they are adrift at the bottom or anything.

  14. Wahey, a cricket thread, I like this forum more everyday! Enough of this snatching defeat from the jaws of victory stuff India were unbelievable, you have to give them credit for that innings. I thought Pieterson declared at the right time and the England bowlers did well in the 1st innings so he was right to expect victory in less than 5 sessions.

That was a fantastic test, Sewags innings really set up the day and makes you wonder why more teams don't play that way early on.

    Roll on Mohali.

  15. Might as well give the Glens the league trophy . piss poor at present anyone we could get on loan in the newyear from Rangers ?

Ha! It's the Hatchet Men's title this season, just you wait and see......

Nah Glentoran have it there for the taking this season. Linfield are suffering a wee bit without Thompson, and the Glens have the best striker in the league - Gary Hamilton

The hatchet men are too far behind to bother anyone this year. They've got a fight for 6th place :harhar:

And fuck anyone getting our record (td):rangers:

Nah, The Glens and the Blues will both implode in a property market/credit crunch/docked points for rioting vicious triangle of despair. Leaving the way open for a majestic and stately march to the title by the mighty Crues. You read it here first.....

  16. The fact its their colours has a lot to do with the flag being there.

I wouldnt put them down for being big UVF men in Rome, now Lazio .......

    Lazio are even worse.

Most of the right-winged Italian Ultras support the IRA, go figure.

No offence but why would right wing Catholic fascists supporting murdering terrorists be a surprise? Or are you being sarcastic.

  17. When did this site start up? I had never heard of it until very recently, same with Vanguard Bears. Does it have an aim or a tie-in with something? Follow Follow makes my eyes hurt most of the time and I inevitably just draw the ire of almost everyone on it if I ever post. I used to post on Fat Eck until he retired, I know he wasn't everyone's cup of heavy, but I thought he was excellent, so now you know where I'm coming from in my views. Site looks good and works well, although the huge length of posts that multi quote can be a bit annoying (second post and I'm criticising already, no wonder I draw ire...). Also can you swear on here?

  18. I'm relatively new round here so I appreciate my words won't carry much weight but I thought I'd add my tuppence worth.

-Joke Cartoon of Neil Lennon on hangman appears on Popular Rangers fan site Follow Follow. BBC Report it as a “death threat” on Radio and on the BBC Website. The hosts of Follow Follow (footymad) close down the message board

Is the issue that it was a cartoon? If it had been a realistic photoshop would that have been OK? In the end, whether we like it or not, Lennon (who is a cant) received death threats from an organisation who had some previous in the killing of people from Lurgan. Let's just say it was ill advised.

-Complete Ignorance of Pearson & Hartson “videogate” scandal

This has nothing to do with Rangers.

-Tam Cowan & Stuart Cosgrove continually using the H Word to describe the Rangers support, until it was officially declared sectarian by NbM

Since then they don't use it though do they, so what's to complain about now?

-Upon the signing of Kevin Thompson, the report of the signing on the BBC Website carries a picture, which has been renamed by someone at the BBC to include the word “C*nt”

Right, someone needed to have a word with whoever did it, but you know, c'mon, it was a joke. How do we know it wasn't a Hibs fan? If the shoe was on the other foot could you really say you wouldn't find it funny?

-Richard Gordon, during his show covering the Transfer Window in 2005, used a racist comment to describe former Rangers player Filip Sebo, joking that he had been “sold to Edinburgh Zoo”

This has been covered elsewhere, we really have a sense of humour bypass here.

-Weathergirl Kirsty McCabe calls Ibrox “Castle Greyskull”

You are joking aren't you, a weather girl, and this is offensive how?

-BBC Scotland ignore number of emails concerned at the lack of reporting of sectarian behaviour by the Celtic Support

    Can you expand on this?

-BBC Scotland schedule specific programme on BBC Radio Scotland about the Famine Song

Well it was a talking point, and an opportunity to set the record straight no?

-BBC Scotland Sportscene Programme’s ignorance of Rangers tributes to Scottish Soldiers previous to Poppy Day, while ignoring Celtic Supporters minutes applause, and walk out the following week.

I'm not sure what you expected from Sportscene here, can you expand?

-When leading on any “sectarianism” news item, using images of Rangers supporters.

Yeah ,that is annoying I agree.

-Photo of Nell McAndrew in Rangers kit entitled “HunC*nt1”

    See Kevin Thomson.

-Spreading the Lie that Artur Boruc was cautioned for blessing himself, across the BBC Network

Poor reporting, poor editorial control. Definitely worth raising.

-Allowing Cardinal PAP to demonise the Protestant Community by claiming there are those who go out to “Punch a Pape”, and put his own spin on sectarian crime figures, which were wholly inaccurate

Again nothing to do with Rangers, thin ice on this.

-Biased Commentary by David Begg commenting on “Derry’s Walls” being sectarian, but no comment on songs from the Celtic Support

Biased commentary from David Begg. I'd complain about that on its own frankly.

-The disappointment in Kheredine Idessane's voice when he announced that Rangers had been found 'not guilty' by UEFA.

    Good luck with this one!!

-The victimisation of Alex Rae following his 50-50 tackle in a Rangers European tie against CSKA Moscow, and submitting footage of the tackle to UEFA.

You know it wasn't a great tackle, but I was surprised that it was highlighted too.

-The failure to report on sectarianism within the Scottish Labour Party, and various land deals involving 2014, and associates of the Labour Party

    Nothing to do with Rangers.

    - Use of the headline "Rangers in Union Flag row" regarding the Blue Order organised flag display at Ibrox, with a one sided piece on it on Reporting Scotland

No idea what this is about, sorry.

    - On the last news report before a cup final involving Rangers and Motherwell, leading on a story about Celtic loan player Craig Bellamy possibly staying at the club

Is this really something to complain about?

    - Using James Grady to comment on an incident against himself by Lorenzo Amuruso in a Scottish Cup Final with no right of reply for Amoruso

How do you know he wasn't offered a right of reply?

-Roddy Forsyth stating to Gordon Brewer on Newsnight Scotland, that Hearts had a worse problem with sectarianism than Celtic.

    Nothing to do with Rangers.

-The Acceptance of Sanjeev Kholi as a football pundit, based upon his only claim to fame in being a “football fan” was to accuse the Rangers support of racism against Mark Walters, when Walters had faced the worst display of Racism ever witnessed in Scottish Football by the Celtic Support at Celtic Park

Well he's as big a football pundit as any of those jokers from the 'comedy unit' who are regularly invited to give their thoughts. The issue here is one of qualification for the job, he seems as qualified as any one of us.

-Sending 88 Staff from the BBC to Seville at licence payers expense, with only a handful present in Manchester

Apart from my surprise at your apparent inside knowledge on this you do massively overlook the fact the BBC have a huge complex in Manchester.

-The despatch of a film crew to Benidorm to report on a Celtic Fans convention that ended in fiasco – and reported it as a success. They have never been present at any Rangers fan convention

Again, this has nothing to do with Rangers.

-BBC Scotland Commentary of Celtic in Seville from Rob McLean “only the most blinkered Scots won't be hoping for a Celtic victory”. This, in a stadium littered with Irish Flags and no Saltires.

Someone else has pointed out that this is hardly bias, has nothing to do with Rangers and that I was also surprised at how many Saltires there were actually.

Nov 2006 – Just prior to live coverage of an Old Firm game, broadcasting a programme on BBC Radio Scotland about the football song “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. The last 15 minutes was a tribute to how it is sung at Celtic by two “Celtic fans”, who both happened to be BBC Producers.

I'm unsure what the point of this is though, you didn't like the programme, fair enough, an example of bias, hardly?

-Making the Producers of Blue Peter apologise for using the RHOU in a piece, owing to complaints from a Strathclyde University lecturer who is a member of “Friends of Ireland”

This had nothing to do with BBC Scotland though and if memory serves the presenter explained herself and BBC Ulster put the complainer right also.

-Ignorance of Neil Lennon’s DOB rant at the Rangers support & Dugout

But the problem with this is the difficulty in accusing him of this publicly. He has never been charged with it far less found guilty, and has never commented on it himself. Raising this on a national station could leave the BBC open to massive litigation.

-The refusal to publish or broadcast any facts on the “bannergate” scandal, where a convicted IRA terrorist painted a banner for the “Jungle Bhoys” supporters group partly funded by Celtic Football Club

What do you expect done here? Apart from it having nothing to do with us, the guy served his time and now does this for a living. I mean ex loyalist and republican muderers work together on 'mural tours' in Belfast now.

-Following Rangers being the first club in Scotland to qualify for the last 16 of the CL, the following morning’s Scottish BBC news neglected to mention the result at all

You know, really was it 'news', sports news yes, but news news?

-BBC Reporting of Irish Government intervention from information provided by Phil McGillivan on “the famine song”

I agree this got incredible coverage, far out of kilter than it deserved. Political games were being played of that I'm sure and we found ourselves in the middle of them. The BBC should indeed explain themselves on this.

For what it's worth the BBC are the easiest organisation to affect change in. Their complaints log is genuinely read and actioned everyday, there are channels that are available for people to follow-up complaints, it can be taken to the very top if it has validity. BUT, looking at life through the prism of being a Rangers fan doesn't make us unbiased either, you know.
