  1. Him and wee Wullie. Pity 90% of the spalpeens had left with twenty minutes still to go. What entertainment they missed!

But that's why Baxter could be infuriating. We could have had seven that night and more.

  2. Amalgamation is essential but it still leaves the regional promotion problem.

eg Promoted as regional champs: Heart of Moray (North) and Lanark Utd (South)

    Play-off winners: Inverness County (North)

SPL bottom three (from the top) Falkirk Albion, KillieAyr and Celtic-Thistle (all south)

Who gets booted up to the Arctic? Geography says Falkirk Albion but is that fair? It could get badly mixed up after a few years. Probably a price worth paying to get rid of the current stupid setup.

  3. You've got this right Mr Goat. I'd only disagree with the winter break. Continuity is important. Playing a match against the same club for times a season is tedious.

I agree with the north/south divide but lookking to the future problems coud arise. For example the automatically promoted clubs are Elgin City (north) and Airdrie (south) The play-off winners are Peterhead (north) The relegated sides are Celtic, Killie and Motherwell (all south) Which two of these go into the north leaugue?

How do they fix this problem in England where the lower leagues are north and south?

  4. Football's a winter game. Never seen a good match on a hot day. Seen some belters in glaur and muck.

But whether it's winter or summer, no breaks. Interrupts the momentum of the season.

Mid season breaks, twenty minute half times. Why bother with the game at all?

  5. These fascists were giving laldy to the Billy Boys at the Antigua Test Match. Don't suppose they were using our words but whatever the lyric it would have been offensive by association to Scottish listeners with Irish ancestry.

I found it a bit offensive myself. The tune was sung too quickly and at too high a pitch.

Did I hear 'Well fans giving the Famine a wee go on Sunday. Sounded like it on radio.

  6. The famine is over. A true fact, is it not?

Why don't you go home? We're only asking.

Nothing sectarian there, wee bit political maybe but that's ok isn't it according to the Brendans, though I can never see what politics or religion have to do with football.

We've listened to them and others for years telling us h*** to go home. Peremptory instruction as opposed to polite enquiry.

  7. Wharton? Don't remember getting much from him. But at least he was the same with every other team. 30,000 voices roar "penalty" but Tiny says to himself "oh, you think so, do you?" and waves play on.

He thought the game was about him and to Hell with players and fans.

  8. 1. Ritchie

    2. Niven

    3. McCloy

Niven may have let in seven against the rattlers but he was betrayed by Valentine. Over his career he was dependable and Ritchie even more so.

McCloy gets a lot of stick but I thought he was pretty good. Apart from the Goalie Peter made the best save I ever saw playing for 'Well against Hibs at Easter Road. He was going to his right to catch a corner when the ball was deflected off a defender to Neil Martin four yards out. Martin was superb in the air and headed the ball down to McLoy's left. Keeper twisted and jumped downwards (if that's possible) to palm the ball up and over the crossbar. I was standing right behind the goal at the time. The memory's never left me and that's why I wasn't all that impressed by Banks' save from Pele!

  9. Bill Brown was as good a keeper as any I saw. He played in two of the best sides ever to visit Ibrox. That Dundee team was something.

But the Goalie had that extra magic to conjure up the impossible. Most keepers can make the occasional "wonder save". The Goalie alweays seemed to do it when it really mattered.
