  1. Everytime Rangers in that period is mentioned his name comes up, and as an under-rated talent.

Great player and under-rated for sure. If I was to compare Smith at his best to any other world class player of the same era it woul be to Frans Beckenbauer. Both brought class to the role of sweeper.

    Happy b'day Smudger.

  2. Gogzy - I would like to take this poster to task on that accusation that I won't stop messaging him. I know this can be checked.

It seems there is mischief afoot here.

Sometimes you DO post shite but the person lobbing accusations seems to have materialised fairly recently. timings and accusations seem a bit odd.
  3. Danny Kelly was on TalkSport saying that this Spurs team was the greatest team ever. Apparently they played the beautiful game the way it should be played. Did they not win a European trophy with Blanchflower and a Scottish winger they called 'the Ghost?'

I have no idea. Too young to know.

I have also heard from my elders that the Rangers team in the early sixties were pretty hard to beat in terms of great football.

The Ghost was John White who was tragically killed on the golf course. Struck by lightning.

White was a brilliant player and a Scottish internationalist and only 27 when he died. He was an old fashioned inside left (midfielder in todays parlance) and was a prolific goalscorer.

He played in the same Spurs side as Blanchflower, Greaves and Dave Mackay yes it was a great team indeed.

  4. Aye, clearly past it and would add nothing with all the goals he's been scoring in the country's highlest league this season..

Aye I see what you mean '2 days ago - Kris Boyd took his tally to six goals for the season' The Ayrshire Messi?? (tu)

    Be better signing one of these guys;

    SPL top scorers

    20 Michael Higdon (Motherwell)

    20 Billy McKay (Inverness CT)

    19 Leigh Griffiths (Hibernian)

    16 Gary Hooper (Celtic)

    16 Niall McGinn (Aberdeen)

    13 Johnny Russell (Dundee United)

    12 Steven Thompson (St Mirren)

    11 Paul Heffernan (Kilmarnock)

    10 Andrew Shinnie (Inverness CT)

    10 Jamie Murphy (ex-Motherwell)

  5. Since i'm quite young compared to alot on here and wasn't lucky enough to be alive/or old enough to see some of the best players to have ever played for us, was just seeing if those who were fortunate enough to see the following players, could compare them to any footballer in the world today, so i can have a good idea of what type of player they were.

    Davie Cooper

Brian Laudrup (was abit too young to remember)

    Ian Durrant (pre injury)

    Sandy Jardine

    Graeme Souness

    Derek Johnstone

    Jim Baxter

    John Greig

M8 you need to remove James Curran Baxter from that list as the world has never seen a comparable player.

I fear that neither the Rangers nor the world will ever see his likes again. Yes he was THAT good and not audacious, but to quote 'Bill & Ted' he was BODACIOUS dude.

Jim Baxter was a genuine one-of-a-kind and I feel blessed to have actually seen him play.
