  1. The positve from Saturday was four under 19's in the first team squad, three getting on that park plus Jamie Ness, and the youths still beat Aberdeen 3-1. Jamie would have appeared by now if he hadn't had a few injuries this season. I think his assets are his range of passing and his strength and phsyique, sort of in the Nigel Spackman mold.

I try to keep my opinion on players out of the blog. I see it more as a report/update site rather than my opinions. Of the current 19's not yet featured in the first team there are a few i think have a chance. I have always liked Kyle Hutton although he did't seem to get the recognition in the past, that has changed and he has been selected for Scotland at under 19's after missing out at younger age groups. Kane Hemmings is another and I would have said that before his hat-trick on Saturday:)

At the moment from the under 17's the most likely to progress are Kamil Wiktorski, Dylan McGeough and Kyle McAusland, that could change as players progress at different rates and some take wee setbacks. One that I have been impressed with but doesn't feature in the international teams is Ewan McNeil, I think he could be a regular for the youths next season and push in to the Scotland squads.

This is only my opinion of course, if you want any other info e-mail me

  2. Gregg Wylde has alternated between left back and left midfield. Tends to lose concentration defensively at times, so unlikely to be used at left back for a while. He is a real athlete and will get up and down the left side, he also has great pace. Final ball needs to worked on and he is very one footed.

I certainly think he has got a chance if not ready to be a regular at the moment.

  3. i will admit to knowing next to nothing about the youths,

Why start a thread slating something you confess to knowing nothing about ?

brown made hibs 4.5mill, fletcher 4mill, o'conner was a couple of million, and thommo and whittaker skinned us of 4million

thats nearly 15million in transfer fees hibs have got from their youths

Perhaps it is Rod Petrie that should be getting the plaudits and not the Hibs youth department

Transfer fees is not the only factor in measuring success

How much was Ross McCormack's goal in Porto worth ? At least the equal to one of Hibs transfer fees.

How much was Charlie Adam's domestic and European goals worth ? At least the equal to one of Hibs transfer fees.

So I would argue that these two are youth development "successes". Maybe not long term first team players, but the investment in their development was paid back several times over.

The facts are very few teams at the top of their leagues develop youth players in any numbers. Barcelona are the exception at the moment and probably Ajax in the past, but they have struggled in the . Younger players usually come through at middle ranking clubs like Auzerre under Guy Roux, where the pressures and expectations are less. It doesn't mean you don't stop trying and as I have said we need to look at a wider market.

where the fuck are the youths mate

They will be playing Aberdeen at Murray Park at 1pm on Saturday. Where Archie Campbell will be hoping to get his confidence back and secure a contract and Kane Hemmings will be continuing his development to hopefully be challenging for the first team within the next year or two

  4. I reckon Archie Campbell could do well against Hearts, no doubt it will be Lafferty and someone else though.

I try to keep everything positive when talking about the youths, but Archie has scored two competitive goals this season, both penalties.

Archie needs to play for the youths and get his confidence back

  5. People seem to have an inflated impression on the standard of the youth league. Last season Hibs were the best team and probably the oldest team and proved that by winning the double, almost all moved up as they are too old for the youth league.

One, David Wotherspoon has make the break into the first team, Kurtis Byrne (Northern Irish) has been on the fringes. As I said Scotland don't produce the players anymore, believe me Fleck, Wilson and Ness are exceptions, to have three from the same year of their standard is a real bonus. We can only hope they develop and are with us for a few years.

yet killie managed to train up the SPL top goalscorer

Yes Killie have produced ONE top player in how many years ? They beat Rangers in the youth cup final a few years ago, how many of the Kiille team are still playing senior football

I don't agree that we have a shocking youth record, in recent years we have produced as many Scottish internationals as anybody. We are producing our fair share of the best players in the country, unfortunately Rangers require better players than that.

The net has to be cast wider, like everything else this costs money with no guarentees of success.

  6. Not another Murray Park is a waste post !! These usually come from somebody that has never been there and never seen the Youths play.

We have seen Hibs,Motherwell,Falkirk and Aberdeen produce quality youngsters year in year out

Hibs I would agree with to an extent, but Riordan has proved to be a "Hibs", the jury is out on Thomson (at best), Whittaker is regularly slated on here, as is Brown and Gary O'Connor when he was mentioned as a possible target.

Motherwell with the exception of McFadden have produced Motherwell players.

Falkirk have produced Falkirk players, Aberdeen have produced Aberdeen players ( although Fyfie looks the exception and a real talent)

How many players recently produced by these clubs in recent years would be Rangers first picks ? Rangers have produced plenty players of that standard, look around the leagues, but being a Rangers player requires something more.

All this has been done where theses clubs have reached the heady heights of fourth in the league and never won a cup in that time. The facts are Rangers have to WIN, two defeats is a crisis. Not the best environment to introduce young players.

We have let many good young players go like Fetai Ashikodi Furman

With all due respect to the three lads, Fetai is with the Danish equivalent of Hamilton Accies, Ashikodi was last seen at Shrewsbury Town and Furnam is at Oldham Athletic (21st in Division 1), where he has played 21 games an failed to find the net once.

Despite what is suggested on these forums, Rangers should look at every player recommended to them. You may be surprised to know that Danny Wilson, Jamie Ness, Gregg Wylde, Archie Campbell, Kyle Hutton to nae a few, were all at other senior clubs before Rangers. It is not difficult to send a scout to take in a game and make a decision. Fortunately the club does this and there are probably over 100 trialists through Murray Park every season. You only need to look at how many time the word "trialist" comes up in the blog match reports. If Mendes hadn't played the other day, nobody would have reported on the trialists, this is a weekly occurance, especially during a transfer window.

The net will have to be cast wider as the raw materials in Scotland are thin on the ground. At the other side of the city their youth lineups this season have on quite a few ocassions only included four Scots and Hibs youth squad has eight players from south of the border.

Visit Murray Park and see the work that the scouts and coaches put in before having a go at them. They can only do so much but its not an exact science and there are a multitude of factors that contribute to successes and failures.

  7. I remember reading an article on the legendary Auxerre manager Guy Roux a few years ago. He said he would not expect players to be regulars in the first team until the age of 22/23. Being at a smaller club he said gave them an advantage in that respect, where they could be more patient with players developing. Where as bigger clubs are looking for intsant success and discard players at a younger age.

Looking at the Auxerre teams under his rule he did develop a lot of players discarded by the so called bigger French clubs. If I can find the article I'll do a feature in the blog in the net few months.
