  2. Rangers star Kevin Thomson is given green light for top-team return Jul 2 2009 Exclusive by Keith Jackson KEVIN THOMSON has been given the all-clear to return to the Rangers top team ahead of the big kick-off. Thomson jetted south to London yesterday for a crunch consultation with the surgeon who rebuilt his mangled left knee after a horrific injury at Kilmarnock in November. And despite Walter Smith's fears his midfield anchorman might not be back in action until September, the 24-year-old is now on course for a firstteam return two months ahead of the manager's timetable. Thomson has been given the green light by his Harley Street specialist to join in when the full pre-season schedule begins a week today. And the player will now be targeting a comeback appearance either in Germany, where Scotland's champions will begin their warm-up matches, or the Emirates Tournament at the start of next month. Ibrox reserve coach Tommy Wilson, meanwhile, admits fewer hitkids will go out on loan after a clutch of them endured frustrating spells away from the club last season. Wilson said: "We played Celtic reserves without Steven Kinniburgh, who went to St Johnstone but never kicked a ball, and had to play a 16-year-old. The first-team squad will be smaller this season so there may be fewer chances for players to go out on loan." great news

  9. CHARLIE ADAM has pleaded with Rangers manager Walter Smith to give him a second chance at the club. The midfielder was loaned out to Blackpool last season after the Ibrox boss decided he didn't fit into his first-team plans. But Adam is set to return to Murray Park next week to begin pre-season training and wants to remain at the double winners. Several championship side have him on their wanted list with Blackpool and Barnsley leading the race for his signature. advertisement Rangers could cash in on the player and bank around £500,000 from moving him on but, Adam would prefer not to go. He said: "I have three years left on my contract and I'd love to see it out. "I'm only thinking about being as fit as possible when Rangers start next week. "I really want to settle down with one club, preferably Rangers. "But if I am going to struggle for a starting place, I really will have to think seriously about my future." Smith is believed to be targeting a left-sided midfielder for the new season, which could spell the end for Adam. It's believed the manager will outline his plans to several players at the start of pre-season training and make it known if they are not in his first-team plans. if i was walter i would tell adam u are not wanted u fucking fat goose bastard
  10. RANGERS Kris Boyd The striker once again finished as Rangers' top scorer last season, but doubts over his future at the club arise almost as frequently as he hits the net. Interest from Birmingham in January showed that Rangers were willing to sell, a similar situation may again be on the cards this summer. Verdict: Keep. Boyd's goal tally was invaluable as Rangers secured a league and cup double. He must keep showing the signs of improvement to his overall game that became apparent at times last term. Everyone has their price, though. Barry Ferguson A tearful appearance at Hampden after Scottish Cup victory may signal that the former captain has played his last game for the Light Blues. Has been hampered by injuries in recent years and made a minimal impact last season. May be reunited with Alex McLeish at Birmingham. Verdict: Sell. With Kevin Thomson, Maurice Edu, Steven Davis and Pedro Mendes, Rangers have a plethora of midfield talent. In times gone by, Ferguson would have been ahead of the field but his ticket appears to be up at Ibrox. His hefty wage packet could be better spent by Smith. Nacho Novo The little Spaniard has become a hero among the Gers faithful. Has scored goals when it matters, including Helicopter Sunday, the winning penalty against Fiorentina and a stunning strike in the Homecoming Scottish Cup final. Has admitted he would like to return to his hometown club SD Huelva before his playing days are out. Verdict: Keep. A valuable squad player but not a first-choice pick. Has done enough in a blue jersey to merit a contract extension. Kirk Broadfoot The man with the "limited ability" - and that's just his cooking skills - has been an inconsistent performer since his move from St Mirren. Ever eager to gallop forward in support, his final ball is poor and could find himself warming Steven Whittaker's spot on the bench should he remain at his boyhood heroes. Verdict: Keep. Unless Walter Smith can find a quality replacement, or throw young Danny Wilson into the limelight, then Broadfoot and Whittaker will once again fight it out for the right-back slot. Can play across the back four and has the adaptability that Rangers need. DaMarcus Beasley One of the quickest players in Rangers' squad but rarely puts that pace to use. Could have done with an extended run in the side. Writing was probably on the wall when Steven Smith got the nod ahead of him. In the shop window recently at the Confederations Cup. Verdict: Sell. Walter Smith tried just about everyone on the left side last season and nobody has made the jersey their own for the upcoming campaign. Having the American's wages off the bill, plus, a possible transfer fee, looks like a better option than keeping him on. Steven Smith The forgotten man of Ibrox made a surprise return to the side at the end of last season as a left-winger. Looked highly promising before his injury problems but has failed to develop as expected. Might be time for a fresh start. Verdict: Sell. With Sasa Papac as first-choice left-back and Whittaker able to fill in, Smith will find his options limited once again. A summer move would be the best option for both parties. Alan Gow The other forgotten man of Ibrox. Rangers fans who have seen him play are a rare breed. A move to Wolves broke down last season and he spent time on loan at Norwich. Buying a left-sided midfielder must be a priority for Smith and Gow would find himself in the wildnerness once again if he stayed. Verdict: Sell. Gow needs first-team football if he is to get his career back on track. Dream move to Ibrox has not worked out and Rangers are unlikely to stand in his way. Graeme Smith How many forgotten men do Rangers have? Still behind Allan McGregor in the pecking order, even after his Scotland antics. Neil Alexander seems to be the No.1 and there will only be room for one Smith - Walter- in the Ibrox dugout next season. Verdict: Sell. Smith is another who needs football and that is unlikely to happen at Rangers. Might find himself second choice if McGregor moves on so could decide to hang around for another season.

  13. it is on the bbc website a journalist asked him about what are youre ambitions about the champions league he said the punters will hopefully enjoy it but we are rangers and we are there to compete great stuff thomo unlike broadfoot saying a few weeks ago we know we arent going to do well broadfoot u can feck of back to st mirren with that attitude
  14. Tonel Sporting Lisbon defender Tonel has been strongly linked with a move to Rangers. The experienced Portuguese player's agent has confirmed that Rangers have made enquiries and that Walter Smith tried to secure his services in January. Tonel reportedly likes the idea of a link up with fellow countryman Pedro Mendes. Rangers face competition from a couple of Italian sides for the 29-year-old's signature. Alan Hutton Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is reportedly willing to offer Alan Hutton back to Rangers. Spurs have an abundance of right-backs at the club and Redknapp is eager to trim the squad. The 24-year-old left Ibrox in 2008 but has made just 19 appearances for Tottenham. Andre Bikey Reading defender Andre Bikey is reportedly interesting Walter Smith. The 24-year-old is valued at around £2.5m but Rangers will face competition from Stoke for his signature. The Cameroon international was impressive during his time in the Premier League with Reading and the Royal's failure to regain promotion to England's top-flight means he could be ready to move on. Marlon Harewood Rangers will reportedly offer Marlon Harewood a route out of Villa Park. The 28-year-old struggled to force his way into the first team at Aston Villa after a £4m move last summer. Harewood is also interesting Fulham and Stoke but Walter Smith is hopeful Champions League football will entice the English midfielder north of the border. Chris Brunt Rangers are reportedly lining up a £3m bid for West Brom winger Chris Brunt. Brunt scored a flurry of goals at the end of last season's Premier League, creating quite a bit of interest. Rangers are likely to face competition from Celtic, with Tony Mowbray thought to be interested in linking up with his former player. Brian Stock Walter Smith is apparently lining up a bid for Doncaster midfielder Brian Stock. Valued at around £1.5m, Stock is also being monitored by Birmingham and Wolves. The 27-year-old has scored 14 goals in 97 appearances for Doncaster. Kevin Kyle Kilmarnock striker Kevin Kyle is reportedly interesting Walter Smith (pictured). The 28-year-old had a good scoring record last season and has even been credited with keeping Killie in the top tier of Scottish football single-handedly after his move to the club in January
  15. KEVIN THOMSON is hoping for good news when he visits a specialist tomorrow as he strives to be ready for the defence of the SPL title in August. The midfeild star has been working tirelessly at Murray Park all summer as he comes back from a major knee injury which wrecked the last campaign. Thomson now feels he is well on the road to a complete recovery and he hopes he will have this affirmed when he travels to London tomorow. The Ibrox medical team are not rushing the midfield star but Thomson is desperate to be ready for the new campaign having missed out on the Double celebrations. He said today: "I'm going to see the specialist tomorrow for a final check up and hopefully it will allow me to move on and get back playing. "My fitness feels good and I think I will be ready for the start of the season." Thomson's season fell apart when he suffered cruciate ligament damage at Kilmarnock on November 9 and he had to look on envously as his team mates roared to the title in the final day at Tannadice and then completed the Double a week later when Nacho Novo's goal won the Scottish Cup Final against Falkirk. He said: "It was hard sitting on the sidelines watching the lads. I had to try to stay focused. I was obviously willing the boys on but when you are not involved it's difficult. "It was a fantastic that the lads won Double and hopefully we can have more of the same next season." hopefully some good news for thomo kevin thomson the next captain of rangers
  16. As June slides into its final stages and the summer solstice has come and gone, most people look forward to their summer holidays. Meanwhile, as Britain’s airports reach fever pitch, football players are looking to return to training and the cogs of a new football season start to grind into action. As in the last few seasons Rangers will be heading to Germany for a training camp and three pre season friendlies. During last seasons visit to Germany two amateur teams managed to dominate Rangers for large spells of the game. In addition, the glamour game against Schalke saw us defending on our own 18 yard line for most of the game. The signs of football poverty were there for everyone to see. It would seem everyone that is, except the Rangers coaching staff. It was obvious to all we were crying out for midfield reinforcements but still Rangers stalled on buying Stevie Davis to save £500,000. A decision that probably cost us £10million in the long run, by missing out on the Champions' League and European football in general. Surely the reason for these pre-season games is not only to get match practice, but also to evaluate the development of the team. Newspapers, football forums and everyone who had the slightest piece of football knowledge, could see that Rangers were struggling to beat teams at amateur level. Then came the first leg of the Kaunas debacle. Still the signs that we were not equipped to even beat a so called pub team at home never got the alarm bells ringing. Only when we lost to Kaunus in Lithuania did the penny drop that we needed reinforcements. Closing the barn door after the horse had bolted springs to mind. It is of course easy to blame Walter Smith but we also have to ask ourselves in how much Walters hands were tied in spending any cash for players. Looking at it from a distance it looks like the club board had decided the risk of losing to Kaunas was minimal and saving money on transfer deals was worth risking the £10million Champions' League cash. A decision that came back to haunt us. A decision that meant that Carlos Cuellor - arguably the best defender to play for Rangers in years - had to be sold to finance any new signings. This season, with the tour of Germany leading the way to a tournament at the Emirates where we meet Paris St Germain and Arsenal, followed by two friendlies against Manchester City and Portsmouth, there will be plenty of chances to assess our development. While knee-jerk reactions to bad games are no use to anyone, these games will offer up an insight to where our weak points are. Indeed, most Rangers fans will aleady agree we need to strengthen our defence (especially if Bougherra is lost to international duty during much of January) while left-midfield remains a priority. Of course, as it stands, finance is an issue so that is as good a reason as any to ensure the younger players (such as Wilson and Fleck) are given the chance to impress and develop in the close season. Our technical staff have to monitor this and act upon it if necessary. While advancing in the Champions' League would be financially fantastic, a more realistic run in the UEFA Cup should be achievable where we'd have to end at least third in the CL group. With the SPL television money uncertain we have to look to Europe to make our money. As such, if we do not strengthen then I feel we will be missing out on valuable income. The technical and management staff must use the close season to spot the weak spots and patch them up immediately. We cannot afford another such weak start to the season as last year. Our management have to read the signs and make certain of a Euro run and Euro money whilst consolidating our place as the SPL's best side. Gambling with money is a mug's game. Let's minimise the risk by making sure the team is ready immediately. another great article by gersnet

  21. Sporting defender Tonel is hoping to seal a summer move to Rangers in a bid to experience play in a foreign league. The Portuguese stopper, who has won one cap for his country, has spent his entire career in his homeland. However, the 29-year-old is seeking a new challenge and has heard good things about Rangers from compatriot Pedro Mendes. Tonel sees the SPL as an attractive league and would relish the challenge of playing UEFA Champions League football at Ibrox. "I want to experience a foreign league, but I still don't have a timescale for this," explained Tonel. "In the winter transfer window there were not many opportunities, but now there might be chances. "My agent is working on some deals and I'd prefer to play in Scotland, which is an attractive league where Rangers are in the Champions League. "Also my friend Pedro Mendes has told me good things about the club, which is also important." Sporting are believed to value the defender, who is contract to the club until 2011, around the €3million (£2.5m) mark, but maybe prepared to accept nearer €2m (£1.7m). Tonel's agent says there is interest in his client and has urged clubs to firm up their interest: "We have some options, but clubs have not contacted Sporting to reach an agreement. "This is key because the player still has a contract until 2011. I can clarify that I've not spoken with Rangers' directors." if we sell ferguson and adam we should be able to afford him sell ferguson for 1 .2 million and adam for 500 k
