To be brutally honest why should we be looking to bring players in for the Maribor tie? Like Malmo we already have a squad capable of beating them and if we dont then thats down to the manager and players.
We should be looking to bring in quality for the league title and group stages, if that means we wait a week or two to sign the right player then so be it.

I'm seriously strting to get pissed off - failure to sign players, especially when the difference in valution is 200k eruos is pathetic. if he is the right guy then give the money and cut back elsewhere. This would be bad enough but the way the whole Goodwillie, Verhoek and Juhasz 'negotiations' have been carried out is emabarassing.

I dont understand all this bullcrap about it being too early in the transfer window to get players in. Most clubs have done buisness infact Epl clubs have spent £200M worth of buisness, its a sad fact that our 'scouting' system focuses mainly on england where every player is so vastly overpriced its beyond a joke.
But it's a bit easier to get these players early if you are throwing 50k a week at run fo the mill players - that is one of the points the OP is making.

Most players are complete mercenaries and when every club in the EPL and half of the championship can outbid us and pay higher wages it's an up hill struggle. Plus most of them are on a beach in July and not really bothered where they will pick up their 20k a week next season.

No it wasn't, last seasons champion winning team are more than capable of beating a mid table Swedish side.
A lack lustre first leg and a lack of discipline lost us that tie and the best part of 15 million quid.
