  1. Dialect refers normally to a variety of a particular language, in this case English. For example, Cockneys have their own dialect. As do people from Stornoway. What you meant was grammar. Now, I know that you will try and counter this, but just accept you have failed spectacularly and move on with your life.

I seem to remember you arguing with someone else on here about grammar (or is it dialect), you got owned then as well.

Your argument started very well. Your second sentence seen you arguing against your first. Spectacular.

  2. You must be the only fireman/firefighter that works 4 on , 4 off , the rest of us work 4 on, 3 off; as on the last nightshift, depending whether it's midweek night or a Sat night you either work 14 or 16 hours to finish at 08:00 or 10:00, which means you work 8 or 10 hours after midnight into what is perceived your 1st day off! Therefore on that asumption people who work 9-5 get a 3 day w/end as the 8 hours on a Friday don't count.

So if they have a 3 day w/e they shouldn't have to leave the game early as they should have plenty of time to saunter home.

2 day shift. 2 night shift. 4 rota days. I've been working it since 1984 so I'm guessing I've got it worked out by now.

  3. I still use fireman. When my parents tell anyone else what my wee brother does - they refer to him as a fireman.

What can I say - the word is still commonly used in everyday language as I'm sure you know.

I'll pass on your message to my brother about his attendances not matching up to one of his fellow firemen!

I might be wrong but, and I'm going out on a limb here, I'm guessing your parents were born before the eighties?

The word isn't used in everyday language. You're using it in a vain effort to support your argument. It's misplaced. ASK YOUR BROTHER.

  4. It's not those getting the subway that's the problem. It's the supporter clubs bus conveners who tell their members if they aren't back at the bus by 15mins after final whistle then the bus goes without them. Now that's crazy.

Stenhousemuir True Blues by any chance?

  5. If?

    1. Firemen didn't die out in the eighties - some people bowed to language changes that helped no one.

    2. I used the word regularly - not always. My point was that there are those who chose to go even though they know they cannot stay until full-time. I've done it myself. Do they deserve praise for dedication? No - but the damning comments are pathetic from the ill-informed.

    3. I don't know. And - given that it's their choice - it's frankly none of my business.

As a firefighter, I can assure you, the term fireman died out in the late eighties when females joined the fire service. Hence the term "firefighter".

And, as a firefighter, I can assure you, that working four on, four off, and with the variation of Saturday/Sunday games, and early kick offs being the norm now, it is only a couple of times a season a "firefighter" has to leave early.

  6. But if somebody leaves early they haven't gone to '90 minutes of football'.

So what would 'the whole point' of that be?

However I've noted your comments - you would prefer that I didn't go to the game. Well you're not getting my Season Ticket.

Shove it up your ronson lighter. My season ticket Tasers me if I leave before the final whistle.
