CONTROVERSIAL Hibs star Derek Riordan sneaked into a nightclub before punching a fellow reveller in the face, it was claimed last night.

Riordan, 25 — known as Deek — is currently banned from all venues in Edinburgh.

But he managed to get past bouncers at The Hive — where he allegedly launched an unprovoked assault on a teenager who took his seat.

They were both thrown out of the packed premises, before Riordan was knocked back from another venue.

Last night police confirmed they were investigating the incident.

And Riordan is facing a life ban from nightclubs in the capital.

Regulars at The Hive claim he’s been a regular at the venue, despite his ban. The former Celtic star went there with half a dozen mates last Saturday, after he’d played in Hibs’ 4-2 defeat by the Hoops.

Trouble

He’s believed to have struck the 18-year-old shop worker in a row over a seat between 1am and 1.15am.

When the young clubber refused to move, Riordan — backed up by his burly pals — is alleged to have punched him in the face, bursting his mouth open.

Onlookers say bouncers threw the Hibs player — banned for two years under the city-wide Unight scheme — and his posse out of the venue.

Red card . . . Riordan was chucked out of The Hive nightclub after alleged bust-up

One clubber said: “Riordan and his mates are in the club a lot and swagger about like they own the place.

“They seem to have had a lot to drink and his friends were staring at folk looking for trouble.

“The club was pretty busy and Riordan had got up to get a drink from the bar. When he got back some young guy was in his seat which he didn’t take too kindly to. Riordan then squared up to him before smacking him in the face — it was completely unprovoked.

“He was backed up by his mates while the young guy seemed to be on his own, so it was really cowardly.”

Once outside, Riordan and his pals allegedly squared up to the bloodied victim again and he was forced to apologise or risk a further beating. They then made off before trying their luck at the nearby Massa club where they were refused entry.

The shaken teenager, who didn’t want to be named, went home and alerted police. Last night he refused to comment.

Elaine McManus, owner of The Hive, confirmed Edinburgh-born Riordan had been in the club and was thrown out for scrapping.

She said: “Derek Riordan did manage to gain entry but was later removed following an altercation with another clubber.

“We are more than happy to assist the police with any investigation.

Spotted

“The Hive is a fully committed member of the Unight scheme and all door staff will be taking part in a re-education programme.”

We told in August how Riordan was initially hit with a one-year nightclub ban for hurling abuse at door staff at Berlin Bierhaus. It was doubled after he was spotted in Espionage a few weeks later.

Earlier this month Riordan escaped an extension after his Hibs teammates were caught trying to sneak him into Lulu and the Opal Lounge.

The police officer who advises the Unight committee confirmed Riordan now faces a life ban. PC Mark Pickavance said: “If Riordan has been involved in any kind of altercation within a Unight club then I would recommend he is given a life ban.”

Cops will view the club’s CCTV footage as part of their probe. A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: “We are investigating an assault on an 18-year-old man.”

Riordan’s agent, Jim McArthur, and Hibs both refused to comment on the matter. The player was unavailable.
