  1. Our squad overall probably is stronger, however, it is in a couple of areas in the final third where we are certainly are anything but strong and are much less healthy than last season. Weiss, albeit is not every game, brought something a bit different and there was always a feeling he could drop a shoulder and go past a man, haven't replaced that really have nobody like that in our squad at the moment. Kenny Miller's goals were obviously a major factor in us winning the league. His goals aside, we don't have that type of player upfront either now. We are definitely not as strong going forward as we were last season. If anyone thinks we have sufficient cover if Jela were to get injured, I'm sure you wouldn't be saying the same after him being out for two months. It would be a disaster and entrusting our season to players like Beattie and Healy is a horrendous thought.

  2. Obviously Andy Goram was a huge loss, but the one reason we didn't miss him anything like as much as we could have done, was Klos stepping in and taking over from him. After the arse up with McLeish and the injury aside, I simply can't remember him making a mistake of any real note. A top class keeper.

  3. The difference between him and Weiss was, though, when he cut inside he could go by 1 or 2 men and you always felt something could happen such as a goal or a telling pass. He might not have done it in every game, but he was always capable of it and was exactly the type of player we were / are lacking. I'm sure Ortiz will come onto a good game as a decent squad player, it is quite clear playing him on the left wing isn't working.

  4. If we sign another CB, CM, winger and a striker I'll be delighted and amazed at the same time. I think we'll sign another midfielder and a striker and probably bring Wilson in. We badly need a proper winger for someone to give us genuine width and decent delivery but I fail to be convinced we shall get one in. Hopefully if that is the case we get someone who is a real attacking midfielder and someone upfront with pace to partner Jela.

  5. Same as Little, Kerkar, McMillan............waste of wages.

I actually think that McMillan has talent and could show that if he was given an extended run in the team. Sadly I doubt this is going to happen, especially now at RB. Ally's not gonna drop someone on a contract of 20,000 a week.

Presume Healy was brought in as cover at striker, as we so short up front, aside from anyone even liable to score us some goals. Seems like a convenient signing to me. He was here, still plays internationally and was another body for the squad. As it stands though, we must surely all pray that Jela stays injury free this season. Don't want to think of him out for a game much less three months.

  6. I'm sure your right, the amount of dross down there on huge wages is quite amazing. The fact there is so much money from TV etc. in the EPL and clubs with grounds half our size and crowds of a third can pay wages we can't afford is shocking. There are obviously top games in the Premiership, however, there is plenty of absolute mince, it is just marketed very, very well. Stoke v Blackburn on a cold and wet Monday night in the middle of December doesn't exactly float my boat but there you go.

  7. When you take into account the fee, wages and contribution to the team, the Beattie farce has made Ostenstad look like a comparatively decent piece of business.

At one point a fairly decent goal scorer no doubt, but constantly overrated throughout his career IMO. Isn't he on something like 15,000 a week? Anything remotely near that figure is a horrendous thought. :(

  8. What is he then?am pretty sure hes a winger but I will stand corrected.where would u play him?

He is probably best played in midfield on the right of a 4-3-3 to my mind. Let me assure you, he is no winger. Good passer, technically really quite good but even played on the right; people will be disappointed if they are looking for him to be a wide man. No trick and can't beat a man, also lacks the skills and pace of a true winger. I'm not sure why he was ever billed as that sort of player to be honest and I think that has added to part of the disappointment with him so far.

  9. Definetly agree with prudence, after we have signed someone who will add real quality and enhance our team going forward. I'd prefer to buy than loan, otherwise next year we shall be in the same predicament if they are in the key positions we lack quality in. We were supposed to be having a marque signing and were going to shell out around 3.5 Mil on the big Hungarian. Would we not be better served in putting that money towards a quality wide man who can provide service to Jela and inject pace going forward. Really hope we do get someone like that in as we have little to no width, or decent delivery in the team at present. Super knows this judging by his radio interview after the ICT game.

  10. Thought he put in a great performance, especially after being flung into the action. He did himself a lot of favours as did Jamie Ness. Congratulations to him on a good display, if not tested fully by a top class strike force. While I don't doubt Bartley will be a good addition, I hope Perry gets some top team game time. Bartley will be returning to Arsenal while Perry will be developing as our own player and this season, if he is played, could be a major step in him becoming a future regular for us.

  11. Perry looked very assured today. If he were to be fit, wouldn't that be another huge confidence booster if Super handed him a CB role for the tie? Injury crisis not withstanding, a back four of McMillan, Goian, Perry and Wallace wouldn't be too far away from being one of our best defensive line-ups IMO.

  12. He played most of last season at RB. Apparently he can play RB and RM.

Yeah he played at RB for Almeria latterly, played as a right sided midfielder mainly for them over the piece though.

He can also play at LB and at LM, as we have seen. How well he plays at LM is obviously another matter. Either way, if played in midfield he will cut inside and play the ball inside as he is no winger.

  13. Ortiz is a tidy player technically, he won't, however, give us width and delivery even when played on the right. Naismith can play wide right and is a far better option out there than Davis, as we loose all of Davis' influence in the middle, he really doesn't offer us genuine width either. In an ideal world we could get a right and left winger, although that is clearly not going to happen. I suppose someone who can play on both sides would be the best bet.

It is imperative we buy a proper wide man though, even for at least one side in order to give us an outlet and delivery from at least one flank. Part of Jela's game is wasted when we don't give him the service / crosses into the box. Another striker is important, however, I'd suggest this is even more so and hopefully we can get someone with the aforementioned attributes in before the window shuts to give us the width we lack at the moment.

  14. I think he's pretty one dimensional, but he still by far and away the best (only) option we have on the wings at the moment.

Hello Bears! Looks like absolute sense to me here.

I have lived in Spain for a few years and can assure everyone that Ortiz is not a winger. I'll always shout for any player in a Gers shirt, however, while he might look better played on the right and looks to be OK technically, we are not going to be getting fireworks outwide from him. He won't give us any genuine width / delivery from wide areas nor real pace. To my mind the touted 3-5-2 formation would probably suit him better and with the type of player Super is signing, may this will be his thinking this season. Either way, and in particular if not I hope we sign someone capable of giving us real width on the wing. Preferably a player who can beat a man as we are so lacking that at the moment and have lacked it on both wings for years. Ortiz might yet become a good player for the club, even on the right it will not though, be as a proper wide man.
