Peter McCloy backs Neil Alexander

Recommended Posts

Former Rangers goalkeeper Peter McCloy believes Neil Alexander should expect to start the new season as number one ahead of Allan McGregor.

The ex-Cardiff keeper has twice been dumped by Light Blues manager Walter Smith in the last year after deputising for McGregor.

However, Alexander finished the season in goal after McGregor was disciplined by Smith following his part in the `Boozegate' scandal while on Scotland duty.

Rangers travel to Germany on Thursday for a six-day training camp with Smith giving nothing away as to who will start between the sticks next season.

While fans have mixed views about their preference, McCloy, whose Rangers career spanned the 1970s and 1980s, said: "My theory is that the best man should play. In the form that got Allan McGregor in to the Scotland team then I think he shades it over Neil.

"Allan had a wonderful run of form in 2008 before he got injured in the run up to the UEFA Cup final. But Neil Alexander has improved recently and has closed the gap considerably. When both are on the top of their game, I think Allan still shades it but Neil is the man in possession so I would think that he would start next season."
