1894 saw the Rangers at long last get their hands on the Scottish Cup which had evaded them for 20 years.

They defeated Celtic 3-1 in the Final played on 17th February 1894.

Reports of the time state the following :

'From all over the United Kingdon and Ireland came telegrams of congratulations upon the Club's first Scottish Cup Triumph. Mr JB Sliman President of the SFA spoke of the pleasure it afforded him in handing over the cup to a Club such as the Rangers'.

The presentation took place at a jolly social function in the Alexandria Hotel Glasgow. Celtic's players and officials were strongly represented and paid many warm hearted compliments to their victors'

Here's a pic of the President and Committee with the Trophy. Far left is Tom Vallance, the kid who was present when it all started on Fleshers Haugh in 1872.

Wonderful.

Here's the Alexandra Hotel where the Rangers were presented with our first Scottish Cup. The magnificent building sat on Bath Street, it's now sadlly gone and is currently a Fitness Centre ( just up the hill from British Home Stores).

We cover this location during the Founders Tour.

The Scottish League was very much still in it's infancy in 1894, so the winning of the Cup was the pinacle for all competing teams.

The frustration the lads must have felt at the Cup evading them for 20 years must have been incredible. Especially after being cheated ( yes long before Celtic FC appeared on the scene ) twice in the 1877 and 1879 Finals when good goals were chalked off.

John Allan wrote in 1923:

'Mr Dugald Mackenzie ( also pictured) the Club president, said he could ill conceal the pleasure he felt in receiving the Cup. Many years had elapsed since he had hopes of seeing the ''light blues'' winners of the Cup. Although during all of that time they had been as sleuth-hounds after their prey , time and again it had doubled and evaded them until that day when they had safely secured it'

As i said, the news of the Rangers triumph spread fast around Britain. Over the counter of a Birmingham telegraph office was handed the message '' Good Old Rangers........Congratulations From Sunderland FC..........Donald.

A nice wee insight into our history.
