first ever post so don't destroy me please
I remember super ally used to cause similar debate yet through time his goal scoring ability (often against 'diddy teams') has seen him regarded as a legend. I beleive if Boyd is aloud to stay for long enough he too will be remembered as a great. If he stays through this financial 'crisis' then the next managerial appointment will be vital in his rangers career (Ally might be great for him).
Boyd can do the hardest thing in football ( yet he is constantly put down. He is somehow valued at the same price we paid for Lafferty, who has potential but is no proven goal scorer (at any level) and like it or not a striker's role is scoring goals! We would find it difficult to attract someone who has most of the attributes that Boyd lacks and that can score (even half) as many goals as he has. If Boyd had been sold in the summer can you honestly say that you think Miller + Lafferty (or Velicka or Novo or Darche) would - as a partnership which is mobile and can interact fully - have scored enough to keep us in with a chance for the title?
If the answer to that is no then how can you justify selling Boyd, knowing that his goals cannot be made up by the rest of our squad put together? The people that moan about him not doing enough for the team must see that he has at least improved outside the box lately. He won every header on saturday, tracks back etc much more than he ever used to yet he has still scored more than ever.
The majority left in the stadium on saturday joined in a chorus of 'Boydie must stay' after his substitution. He clearly wants to stay so why would some of you rather chase him from our club - his club? Someone said if he was a young Spaniard with a record like Boyd's we would be falling over ourselves crying out to sign him (and yes the standard is different) but we have a natural born goal machine, rangers daft, would happily sign a contract for life and a certain % want to flog him for buttons!!
I accept that he has major flaws in his game (i rage when he is repeatedly caught offside or falling over) but that is merely the reason he will never make it at a higher level - just as Mendes' flaws prevent him from reaching the top EPL clubs - and doesn't mean he is not good enough for us.
He's been our top scorer since he arrived. we've signed strikers who have played in-front of Boyd in that time (better at other parts of the game) but their lack of goals have always left us calling for Boydie (e.g. 2 goals in cup against Utd). What makes you think that with someone playing in his place (from or current squad as we're skint) we would suddenly become a free flowing, goal scoring, tittle winning team?
Boyd's goals have won us over 15 points this season (his equalisers and winners only) such as against hibs when our team could have played all day with out scoring then he scored a goal out of nothing.
Sorry for draggin on but it's frustrating to think that people wont realise how much of an asset he is until he's not there any longer! then (like super Ally) we'll wait years for another to come along....
