  1. daly better than boyd.... oh dear. I honestly think boyd played well.last night. Miller cracking as always

I thought Miller was fine last night (and I didn't want us to sign him) - he seems to be coping OK with he loss of some pace and still has a lot to offer. I honestly couldn't see what Boyd was offering though.

  2. Not making excuses for poor kicking, but when he was at Kilmarnock they played the ball out from the back. If you watch him, you'll see that he nearly always looks for someone to give the ball to, but there's hardly ever anyone available as it's clear that the instructions from McCoist and co are to get the ball up the pitch. Last night, the high balls went up to Boyd, who can't jump or head the ball.

  3. Mentioned this last night at the game, Daly gets dogs abuse for being to immobile but he won 90% of the balls punted up to him giving the team a chance to get forward, every ball sent up to Boyd came straight back down with interest last night. As it seems we are incapable of playing football without punting the ball long then I would suggest its going to be a long hard season for us and Boyd.

You're right - I said last night that at least Daly would hold the ball up for us (and he would have played Miller in a few times), win the ball in the air, and offer a threat at corners and free kicks. Daly suffered last season because he didn't have someone like Miller alongside him. He would be a far better option (even with the dodgy knees) than Boyd.

  4. This has a terrible sense of deja vu all around it....

Thought Boyd WAS supposed to be fit - played virtually all last season top goal scorer - second coming of the messiah etc.

Time will tell, but in the pre season stuff and last night, not seen too much to impress.

Exactly right. It's the same old Boyd: can't move into good positions, can't run, can't head the ball (or even jump). He'll score a few goals against the wee teams, as he always did, but otherwise it's like playing each game with ten men. This is the same guy (only older and fatter) we couldn't play against European teams and who never did anything against Celtic. Another masterful signing by the worst manager in our history.

  5. One very small 'positive' is that the defence won't have to park itself at the edge of our own box for most of each game in order to ensure that McCulloch doesn't get ripped apart by an opposition forward who can run any faster than a snail. It' s a small positive though - as we expected more of the same from the worst manager in our history. Keeping his buddies in the money.

  6. I don't think he's much of winger.

Most articles I've read about him describe him as "industrious" so I imagine he's the sort of player who you put out there if you want a hard working midfield with a player out wide to work back and double up.

I don't mean this as a criticism, but that's exactly the sort of player who would fit really well into a McCoist system.

You mean McCoist has a 'system'?

  7. Remember that game well, it was first time I saw Rangers get beat. Think Sorenson sold a couple of goals, one of them in the last few minutes. Gutted.

But for this, we would have went through the season undefeated, including home and away wins against the mob from the east end's 'greatest ever' team. If we had won our last game, they would still have won the league on goal difference if they beat Dunfermline away the following Monday or Tuesday night. It seems incredible now (sporting integrity and all that) that they were allowed to watch how we got on on the Saturday and then play their game two days later. Not sure but think the reason for this might have been Dunfermline playing in the cup final on the Saturday ( which would make it even more dodgy that they were asked to play what could have been a title decider so soon after the final)

Yes, Dunfermline played Hearts in the cup final on the day we lost to Aberdeen.

  8. Was taken to see us win the league on the last day of the season in 1968, as an 8 year old. Unfortunately we lost 3-2 at Ibrox to Aberdeen, the title went to Celtic. Ferguson was playing centre forward. Still remember the first sight of the stadium as I came up the steps in the main stand. Also the colours (so used to watching black and whiteTV football!)

  9. Rangers; The New Era by William Allison 1873-1966 is STILL one of my favorites.

Remember my dad buying it for me when I was about 9 and moaning (jokingly) about the price of IIRC 25 shillings.

I got it as a Christmas present as a boy, and remember having to look 'era' up in the dictionary because I didn't know what it meant! Still got the book.

  10. Over the years we have been spoilt with a multitude of great players.

But I especially admire players who have a coolness and almost casual ability to make the game look easy, but which actually required great confidence and ability. Players who would stroll through the game, seldom making mistakes.

But in the early seventies we were fortunate to have two of the classiest players ever seen at Ibrox. Sandy Jardine is an obvious choice,

However my preferred choice has to be Dave Smith, a solid rock in the Barcelona 72 side and still the classiest player i have seen in Rangers jersey. He was faultless in the 72 final.

Agree. As a boy I watched Smith, and he was a tremendous player. He had that Beckenbauer style appeared to stroll through games. An extremely underrated player.

  11. You want Boydy back Ally will have to change his entire outlook on how we play football and I can't see that happening. You have to look at the fact that he get us out of the Championship with his goals but I think he stops us winning the top league sooner.

Ally would probably play him in midfield anyway.

  12. Hearts were 'lucky' in the respect that fans knew they were going to get pumped in the majority of games. Can you imagine us ever being in a scenario where fans don't demand the league title?

However, I do think it's appalling that we were still keeping the likes of Telfer, Gasparotto and Gallagher largely on the sidelines while we were going after an unbeaten season. That was just daft.

Fair point about Hearts, and I agree with you on the second point. We've lost a lot of opportunities over the past two seasons to at least give some of these guys a reasonable chance.

  13. 1) The reason people want them back is because they are a better standard than what we currently have, and their emotional ties to the club mean that they could come despite the ability to play at a higher level.

The standard we currently have has been adversely affected by our coaching team's ability to convert decent players (Templeton, Shiels etc etc) into journeymen. How far back are we prepared to go in the basis of the emotional ties?

    2) Re: the wage bill. Do you really think Wallace would allow McCoist to tie any veteran into a lucrative long contract?

It's the current wage bill that worries me.

    3) Ajax, the club most revered around the world for their youth development, aim to bring through only 3 young guys every 2 seasons. While I agree that you need to develop young players, having experienced veterans around them is only going to help their development.

Ajax play at the highest level. We have been playing at lower levels and have failed to take the opportunity to build a future around a young team. Even Hearts have done better then than us in this respect.

  14. Boyd's goals would guarentee winning the championship next season imo, would like him and young Gallagher paired up top.

Problem with this is that Ally probably wants to sign Miller and Boyd, and Gallagher wouldn't get a chance.
