Madjid Bougherra: I will definitely finish the season at Rangers

Madjid Bougherra, arguably Rangers’ most saleable asset come the January transfer window, has insisted that he has no intention of leaving the Ibrox club.

The injured Algerian defender is out of tomorrow night’s Champions League tie against Unirea Urziceni in Bucharest, but he is keen to remain with the Scottish champions for the remainder of the season, regardless of the club’s potential need to sell.

Bougherra has been linked with a possible move to clubs in England’s Barclays Premier League in January but says he is not interested in leaving, though any decision could, ultimately, be out of his hands, if it is decided that it is in the club’s best interests that he leave for a substantial fee.

“I have not changed my intentions from last season,” said Bougherra. “I will definitely stay in Glasgow and I will finish the season at the club. Personally, I love life at Rangers and I am sure they will find an investor and things will work out.

“I feel great in Glasgow, plus I need stability, because it is one of the keys to success and progress, especially on the eve of the Africa Cup of Nations and, I hope, a World Cup.”

Bougherra is confident Rangers will turn around their fortunes on the pitch too. “It has not fallen for us in recent weeks because we have had so many players injured in key positions,” he said.

“We haven’t had a full team and that explains some disappointing results. We play in Romania on Wed nesday and we know that we absolutely must win to have a chance of getting to the next round.

“I won’t play because a knee sprain requires at least four weeks of rest, and I am in my second week. I will not travel to Romania, because I would not recover in time. But my heart is with my team-mates and I really hope they come back with a good result in Romania.”

Bougherra also explained why he went for treatment for his knee in France. “I was born in France and there I did my training as a footballer,” he said. “So I know that the best rehabilitation centres in Europe are in France.

“Once the diagnosis was made, I was sent to clinic in Saint-Raphael because they are specialists in knee trauma. Initially, Rangers didn’t want me to go to France but I had a discussion with the manager and I was allowed to go.

“Rangers realised that I wanted my knee to heal quicker and that it would be good for them too and so they let me go. If I had stayed in Glasgow, I could have been too distracted to concentrate strictly on my rehabilitation. Here, my only mission is to get fit again.”
