Rangers changes for Co-op Cup

Matthew Lindsay

Walter Smith today confirmed he will make several changes to his Rangers team for the Co-operative Insurance Cup game with Dunfermline – but stressed he is not taking the game lightly.

The manager is set to give players such as Neil Alexander, James Beattie, Kirk Broadfoot and possibly even Andy Webster run-outs in the game at Ibrox tomorrow evening.

However, Smith is still desperate for the defending champions to win the match with their First Division rivals and maintain their impressive record in knockout competitions. Since he returned to Rangers in 2007, Smith has only lost one cup game before the final stage – the Scottish Cup quarter-final replay with Dundee United at Tannadice last season.

Although he will use the meeting with the Pars as a chance to give several fringe players game time, he remains keen to oversee a victory.

He said: “We will make changes. We need to make sure everyone in the squad gets the games which keep them match-fit.

“With a small squad, we have to make sure players are ready to play when the need arises.

“Some of them have been getting closed-doors games and not much more.

“We don’t have a big enough squad to make massive changes, but we will be making some.”

Smith added: “That is not to say we don’t want to win it. It would be easy to field a team if we had no ambitions to win it.

“Getting knocked out of the cup by Dundee United was the first cup-tie we had lost since I came back.

“But it is obvious we have to make sure we judge when is the right time to play players.

“For example, Kirk Broadfoot was excellent against Manchester United, but Steven Whittaker is suspended tomorrow night.

“By giving the likes of Kirk a game, it keeps everybody ready to play.”

The return of Webster, who has been out of action since damaging knee ligaments during pre-season training, would be particularly welcome for Smith.

The former Hearts player, who helped United win the Scottish Cup last season during a successful loan spell at Tannadice, would give the Rangers manager another viable option at the back.
