"......and not neccessarily your strongest player in each position."

A refreshing comment by Clive Tyldesley, usually a tit at commentating, after see the Dutch sweep aside the Tallies without players like Edgar Davids and Clarence Seedorf who are argubly better than De Jong and Engelaar, but boy how good did Holland play.

It's an attitude in England and, less so, up here that the strongest player in each position much play. Probably a reason for our failure?

The Dutch are brought up with 4-3-3 football, The Gerries with 4-4-2, the Portuguse with 4-3-3 with wingers and wingbacks.

We're not brought up like that. 4-5-1 anyone?

Pleat is a moron who's managed to completely misunderstand everything as usual.

Seedorf is not there because he withdrew. Van Basten was devastated.

Because Van Basten's management is not about what Pleat said, it's about picking the players IN FORM. This is why that team is so good - not because you have a bunch of big names, but because you have players who are currently producing at club and international level.

The likes of Kluivert are well gone.

And could you really see a Blackburn Rovers defender being first pick under the previous management?

Seedorf would have been in that team the other night if he hadn't withdrawn because he too is in form.

/end rant

Not sure about the other teams mentioned but i think the Dutch play the same system from a very early age right the way through to the the senior national side. All there players know the system very well which makes it alot simpler to slot players in and the system still works at a very high standerd. No one player is key to its success, a simple but ingenius way playing a very complex game.

Well then it lied. Because I saw an interview with Van Basten about it and he was very disappointed about Seedorf's absence. Unless of course the paper said they fell out BECAUSE Seedorf withdrew?
