i hate pre-Gilmour Pink Floyd, and that song is the worst of the lot.

I agree, I don't like this song.

It's the equivalent of Yellow Submarine. A song that really is just a load of pish but people love it anyway.

It's all about opinion. I think that Syd Barrett was extremely avant-garde and put into the context of the time it was written this song is both experimental and surreal. It is not a childrens song like Yellow Submarine. The surrealist/psychedelic movement was in full swing in Europe at this time. Barrett played as big a part in that musically as Salvidor Dali did with his paintings and sculptures. Dave Gilmour himself has acknowledged Barretts contribution to this important era in British popular music. Not least by his homage to Barrett in his performance of Arnold Layne on Jools Holland's show last year...
