A Nice Wee Blog About Lee Wallace

Nothing new but a reasonable wee read:

Loyal is a word which, sadly, has become a stranger in the footballing vocabulary. It is all too common to see players turning their heads with their agents chasing after the next big dollar.

However, if there was ever one word which better summed up Lee Wallace then you would struggle to find it.

In August 2011 Wallace transferred to Rangers from Hearts, a seemingly natural progression for someone of his talents, with the promise of a career challenging for the top honours in the Scottish game in front of him.

Fast forward six months and following the disgraceful financial mismanagement of previous owner, Craig Whyte, Rangers collapsed, firstly hit with the sucker punch of administration before the inevitability of liquidation in June of that summer.

Facing the prospect of at least three seasons being forced to ply their trade in the lower reaches of the Scottish Leagues many of Wallace’s team mates jumped ship leaving the already bewildered club’s support reeling in the manner of their departures.

However the Edinburgh born left-back chose the bold decision to opt with remaining the Ibrox outfit, instead of easily taking the money on offer from a host of admirers elsewhere winning Wallace a raft of platitudes from the Gers faithful in the progress.

Now on the verge of most likely one final season out with the top flight Wallace has been singled out by both Ally McCoist and Lee McCulloch as a true servant to the Glasgow giants, and one ticking all the boxes required to be considered worthy of a place in the club’s hall of fame.

As a player Wallace is all about hard work, in a season where the attitude and desire of some of his team mates could rightly be questioned the left back was the epitome of what some old timers in the Ibrox stands would term a ‘presbyterian work ethic’ charging up and down the left flank on a consistent basis supporting the needs of both defence and attack.

But unlike the, quite farcical, most expensive defender in world football, that Brazilian eccentric David Luiz, one thing that continually stands out with Wallace is his game discipline, he plays with a concentration and reliability which help further underline his reputation as the best full back available to national team manager Gordon Strachan.

Strachan’s predecessor Craig Levein had no qualms in selecting Wallace despite the fact he currently plays in the depths of the Scottish League and thankfully the present incumbent shares his opinion.

With Lee McCulloch now in the very twilight of his career it’s a safe bet Wallace will soon be honoured with the Rangers captaincy – a fine achievement for a fine man who combines his full-time role with the club with a part-time role assisting in the coaching of his local amateur side Heriot Vale.

Sometimes the good guys in football aren’t afforded the high praise they rightly deserve, Lee Wallace is not one of them, the Rangers supporters will tell you that.
