Walter on Cousin: He might be different to what I thought l

GLASGOW (AFP) - Rangers manager Walter Smith believes Ibrox fans are about to see the best of Daniel Cousin after the striker scored in the 3-1 win over Motherwell on Wednesday.

The Gabon international opened the scoring as Rangers beat their third-placed visitors to stay two points behind Scottish Premier League leaders Celtic.

Cousin, who joined from French club Lens for just over one million pounds in the summer, has now scored seven goals but this has not stopped some of the Glasgow club's supporters complaining about his work-rate.

Smith admits Cousin may be more of an out and out goalscorer than he originally thought but he also believes the striker has suffered due a lack of natural playing partners at the club.

French forward Jean-Claude Darcheville would be the natural foil for Cousin but he has missed a significant part of the season through injury.

Kris Boyd, top goalscorer at the club, is another possibility but Smith appears to believe he is too similar to Cousin.

Steven Naismith, meanwhile, is still struggling to recapture the form that convinced Smith to spend almost two million pounds signing him from Kilmarnock in January.

The Rangers boss said: "Sometimes you bring a player in and he's slightly different to what you thought. It may be that Daniel is an out and out goalscorer and if he is then that means we have two.

"But he scored a good goal against Motherwell. It was a good move and a good finish."

Smith continued: "When you bring a player in you have to try and help him as much as you can to settle in.

"A big problem for us this season has been Jean-Claude Darcheville has struggled to play as many games as we would have liked.

"We have a number of strikers at the club but we need a certain kind of partner to help him out and we don't have them at the present moment.

"Daniel has came in and scored a number of goals for us and a good one against Motherwell. I can't ask anyone to be patient but I'm sure if he keeps working away he will have a response from the fans shortly."

A lot of fans booed Cousin's name when the teams were read out at the start. Disgraceful.

There were also a lot of over the top moans and groans when something didn't come off for him. It's quite clear that he's now the new scapegot for a lot of supporters.

His goalscoring ratio in the SPL this season is as favourable as Kris Boyd's, if not better. And Boyd has started more SPL games than Cousin.

I really hope Cousin goes on to prove a lot of fans wrong. And then he can be praised highly by the majority in future, just the way Hutton now is after his 'boo-boy' spell.

SMiths asking us to be more patient with Cousin, perhaps he should be more patient with Boyd and let him play more!!

I would rather have a 24yr old that wants to be at the club playing than a 30yr old who thinks Rangers are a stepping stone!

I dislike Cousin. Shouldn't be anywhere near the shirt if he's using us to get to the premiership. Never have I seen such an uninterested player get 4 back to back starts. The old 'Stick to my signings' by Watty. Not good.

If your pish you don't get to the prem anyway son (tu)

Fanny.

Your right mate, he was hounded by the fans at his old club and now i think we are beginning to realise why!!!

Personally i dont think he is much more of an all round striker than Boyd, becasue Boyds link up play and work rate has been top class in the last few games he has played!

Eh, Hearts anyone......... Boyd was utter sh*te in that game. If that had been Cousin, fans would have been going off their nut at him.

Why was he shit though!

Its not fukin rocket science mate!

We played long ball after long ball up for Lee McCulloch and Boyd and Naismith left to chase scraps! Remember the first half of the hearts game anyone......

We ran riot and Boyds link up play was great with Naisy and McCulloch and Boyd had a big hand in the first goal by making a nuisance of himself and forced the hearts defender into making a mistake!!

And i doubt fans would have went nuts at Cousin because he wouldnt have got a touch of the ball either!

Is this an indication that Walter is looking for a Striker in January?
