CHRIS BURKE won the man of the match award against Motherwell on his first home start of the season then pledged to do his bit to bring honours to Ibrox this term.

The winger has been frozen out of the Rangers squad but drew rapturous applause when he replaced the suspended Lee McCulloch. And Burke doesn't intend to fade back into the shadows.

He said: "The manager told us at the start of the season he'd need every player at some time or other if we wanted to win the league. It's been frustrating for me not to be involved as often as I'd have liked but to play the full 90 minutes and be voted man of the match is progress.

"The way I see it, I'm the one who needs to do more to win a regular place. I need to impress the manager in training and push harder to get a game. A lot of quality in our squad fails to get a regular game but that shows the depth of the pool we have at our disposal.

"We have eight games in January and the same 11 can't play in all of them. I have to take confidence from this game and move on from there."

Meanwhile, Walter Smith admitted he may have found Kris Boyd mark two in the shape of Daniel Cousin by uncovering a striker who scores goals but does little else.

Alongside an own goal, Boyd and his French teammate netted to give Rangers a result that wasn't enough to carry them to the top of the league table but did draw the manager's wrath over his team's second-half display.

Cousin's indifferent display led to rumblings from the stand and he was eventually replaced by Boyd in the second half. But Smith refused to be too down on the player. He said:

"Daniel needs help to settle down in the team and hasn't been helped by the lack of a regular partner up front.

"Stevie Naismith's still finding his way at the club and Jean-Claude Darcheville hasn't started as many matches as we'd have liked which has been aproblem. But I haven't had any fans tell me they're unhappy with Daniel's performances.

He has scored a number of goals and we'll keep working away on him.

"I can't ask the fans to show patience, all I can say is that if Daniel's an out-and-out scorer and nothing else then maybe that means I've got two of them at my disposal."

Smith was less understanding in assessing his team's overall performance against a Motherwell side who dominated in the run-up to their equaliser before having the stuffing knocked out of them by Chris Porter's own goal and Rangers' belated third from Boyd.

Smith said: "We deserved our lead in the first half but could have been behind after an hour. That was due to slackness on our part and it was a fraught second half for that reason.

"But, on a positive note, Burke came back and I hope he can make a bigger impact on the side between now and the end of the season."

Well manager Mark McGhee had believed his team was capable of splitting the Old Firm in the table but conceded that was now just a pipe dream.

He said: "We'll never catch the pair of them and I refuse to kid myself on about that. We're in the race for third spot and that's it. I thought we might have nicked a result but it was Rangers who did that.

"My team could have made more of the chances they got and the players are really disappointed."

if cousin is an out and ut scorer - wtf is he doing on the pitch with THE out and out scorer on the bench ?

something not right here.

i think WS was expecting more from cousin than he can get from boyd, but is covering tracks now saying hes boyd MK2, which doesnt make sense when boyd is twice as lethal and he wont play him.

I think he's trying to make the point that he expects more from cousin than boyd with his alround game,Like holding up the ball, winning headers etc but he playing like boyd the now
