FlippinEck 3,708 Posted February 1, 2008 Share Posted February 1, 2008 Rangers' McCarthy bid scuppered Rangers have abandoned an attempt to bring Celta Vigo's Benni McCarthy to Ibrox after it was confirmed that he would be ineligible to play for the team in Europe. The South African international was the subject of a bid by the Scottish champions last week but it later emerged that his participation in the semi-finals of the Intertoto Cup meant he was cup-tied. Rangers chairman David Murray told BBC Sport Online that the club had received clarification of the ruling on Monday and as a result their interest in pursuing the player had ended. The Ibrox side have until the end of August if they want a new striker to compete in the Champions League proper, providing they overcome Herfolge in the third qualifying round. Mr Murray said: "I spoke to Benni and he was keen to come but he is ineligible to play in either the Champions League or the Uefa Cup, whichever we get in to."
