Injury set to rule Weir out in Italy

DARRYL BROADFOOT, Chief Football Writer April 29 2008

Rangers will have to overcome Fiorentina without David Weir, the stalwart centre back whom Walter Smith does not expect to recover from a groin injury in time for Thursday's UEFA Cup semi-final second leg.

A scan undertaken yesterday revealed the damage is not as bad as originally anticipated and the 37-year-old could make Sunday's Clydesdale Bank Premier League match against Hibernian at Easter Road.

However, the Rangers manager confirmed last night that Weir has virtually no chance of being fit for the trip to Florence. "The injury is not as bad as first feared but I do not think he has much chance at all of playing on Thursday," said Smith.

"He might be okay for Sunday, against Hibs, but we will have to wait and see about that."

There was better news on the medical front after Steven Davis' groin strain was deemed less troublesome than his team-mate's. The Northern Ireland internationalist will resume light training today but is expected to be declared fit.

Smith lamented the raft of injuries and suspensions after Sunday's second successive Old Firm defeat left Rangers five points behind their rivals in the title race, albeit with three games in hand.

Carlos Cuellar is available after serving a one-match domestic suspension and will partner Christian Dailly in defence.

Kevin Thomson is also free from suspension and will bolster Rangers' midfield as the club attempt to procure the away goal that could take them into the UEFA Cup final against either Zenit St Petersburg or Bayern Munich on May 14 at the City of Manchester Stadium.

I think Weir deserved a pension. It seemed to me he doesn't have time to work with a ball and doesn't have time to think together with a rapid game.

But experience!!! Experience is global! I very respect Weir ! Today... it one of the respected Rangers players for me!

But age ... today in football it's necessary to be quick, although...for SPL he fully befits.

Fiorentina strikers are very rapid....

Sean Davis given all clear for Fiorentina clash but David Weir is out

Apr 29 2008 By Keith Jackson

RANGERS' linchpin David Weir is OUT of Thursday night's UEFA Cup semi-final return against Fiorentina.

But the ravaged Ibrox outfit were given some relief yesterday when crocked midfielder Steven Davis received the all-clear to return to action in Florence.

Both Weir and Davis limped away from Sunday's derby defeat at Celtic Park with groin injuries and reported to Murray Park yesterday to have the damage assessed.

Record Sport understands Weir's strain is not as bad as was first feared and the 37-year-old has a chance of being fit in time to face Hibs away on Sunday.

Weir may even travel to Tuscany tomorrow with Walter Smith's squad but only so the medical team can continue his treatment around the clock as they attempt to get him ready for a gruelling run-in towards a possible quadruple.

Davis, though, has been passed fit despite hobbling away from Parkhead at the weekend. It's believed the Northern Ireland captain suffered nothing more serious than cramps during Celtic's 3-2 victory.

Smith has been told the on-loan Fulham star will be fully fit for a match that could see Rangers make it through to a European final for the first time in 36 years.

Another of the Ibrox boss's midfield options, Charlie Adam, is also on his way back after more than a month on the sidelines due to a knee injury. The player saw a specialist yesterday for one final check-up and is expected to return to full training this week.
