It's going to take time to sort this squad out. We're lucky the filth are also poor this season, because it gives us a decent chance to compete for the league if we can do some short-term fixes in January, but it's going to be a 2-3 season project to fix the underlying organisational / structural issues. The foundations for those issues were laid by Wilson but reached their insane peak over the summer with Beale. Unbalanced squad, poor signings on high wages + long contracts, and almost total failure to work toward significant player trading revenues. Of course these problems are all self-perpetuating because with poor, ageing players on big wages you struggle to get rid of them + generated revenues for replacements. It's fucked.

We need a DOF, or something similar, in ASAP to support Clement on this side of things. Clement's obviously much more capable than Beale, but if you leave it all to a manager (whose job is only ever a handful of losses away from being threatened) you're inevitably going to tend toward short-termism.

How is Clement more capable than Beale? The latter if you remember won 14 out of 15 of his first league games with the other being a draw. In time he may well prove to be but the exact same thing would have been said of Beale v GVB after a dozen or so games.

Wonder if we will get any stories leaking in the future about what went on behind the scenes?

Looking back on it now I am beginning to wonder if the board had reservations about his recruitment before the season had even started in earnest, when they saw the level of player he had brought in.

I know he liked to talk a lot but he was pretty specific in identifying a couple of positions he wanted to strengthen in the last few weeks of the window (replacement for Kent and defensive reinforcements in particular) and then the transfer chat pretty much dried up apart from a late loan bid for Souttar.

Could just be that we had blown the majority of the budget in Lammers, Danilo & Dessers and couldn’t find the right players with what we had left, but could also see the scenario that the board were looking at what he had already brought in and weren’t willing to trust him with any more cash.

Lets not pretend that the board gave Michael Beale a checkbook and told him off you go before asking him first game of the season so who did you buy then? The board should have a vision about the types of players we want to sign as well as signing off the likes of salaries. The board should have a long term plan and any manager coming in should be aware of that including transfer funds and wage structure.

This is the first post that I’ve read that gives me any confidence in a Muscat appointment.

Like a number of others, I’m concerned that we drift into appointing Muscat (ex-player, copying the scum winning formula) without doing a rigorous recruitment job, exhausting every possible candidate, good points and bad points, and only then, if Muscat is still clearly ahead, do we appoint him.

If he truly is the best candidate and the most likely to have prolonged success, then I’m in but we need to really do our homework and do a thorough recruitment job, possibly with experienced external consultants.

After two lazy appointments that have gone disastrously wrong, a complete rethink on how we identify and assess candidates is needed.

If we’re not already a laughing stock, we certainly will be if we fuck this up.

We should interview quite a few people asking them how he thinks the current squad would line up, the strengths and weaknesses of them. Where he would feel we need to strengthen and where he thinks those players would come from. The board need to be honest with the candidates about how much budget is available.

Since Ferguson Man Utd have appointed some of the most experienced managers in the game and fucked it up so how does that help with your theory.

Man Utds problem is every manager has come in and spent money on random players rather than slowly try to build a team. In effect they are back to where they where before Ferguson started managing them.

It worked to an extent but we can't keep doing that.  There are 2 ways to break the cycle as I see it.

1 - massive investment to sustain success (I'd take oil money at this point - has any of the arab owned clubs actually failed yet?)
2 - do a Man Utd c.1994 and promote the kids to play alongside a solid top quality spine of a team, hopefully getting a 'conveyer belt' going but keeping the best of them longer term.

1 - we just need to be run well we don't need 10;s millions

2 - our support would never tolerate that

If you manage to cut through the word salad the rhetoric does nothing but talk 'the club' (i.e. board/manager/staff) up and then in the last line blames the players for letting them down.

'fourth pillar', 'set out the foundations' 'notable achievements' 'record transactions' '£5m...falls into the positive column' 'Bennett and his board..had to commit to underwriting Beale's recruitment blueprint' 'net spend of close to £6m' 'backed by the board' 'Banfield/Day experienced sounding boards' 'as many deals as possible done before return to training' 'utilise the wage bill in a different manner' 'reduce squad size/average age - both those targets achieved' 'remarkable profit' 'Beale .. put in the hours – in trains, planes and automobiles – to sit down in front of those that he wished to recruit' 'Their personal attributes were identified, previous teams and systems analysed and a blueprint of how they would fit into the squad and the side at Ibrox was laid out. Beale’s love for the game is evident whenever he speaks and several of his signings addressed those messages as being important factors in their decision-making process' 'Rangers paid just over £1m for Cifuentes...a player that Rangers believe will be sold on for several times what was handed over to Los Angeles' 'Beale has made his decisions and the board have backed his calls.'

You can argue that it may have been the right things to do - investing the cash in the team, going above and beyond to attract players, wheeling and dealing to make up the shortfall in the PTM caused by letting assets leave for nothing.

The counter to that argument is that it may still end up (and already looks like) the wrong players were attracted.

We've been round in circles doing this since Murray sold us down the river. Dross in, dross out and more dross in.

It's very early in Bennett's tenure and articles like this will soften any criticism coming the way of the folk in charge. The last thing they want is their faces ending up on banners like the last lot.

King talked about front loading investment about 5-6 years ago to set up a player trading model

I have no time for Morelos. I feel he cost us as many games as he won for us. I felt that he only saw us as a stepping stone. He always had one eye on the door. The fact that he couldn’t even be bothered to learn the language spoke volumes. I lost all respect for him when he got sent off against Hibs , dropping g us to 9 men and he was laughing while walking off the park. Some supporters idolised him but, I feel that’s the younger ones who have never seen some of the true talent we have seen at Ibrox.

You are correct to say in the last decade we have been starved of talent. However Alfredo was a indeed a flawed player who we got for 1 Million and returned that investment many times over (just look at the amount of players we have signed for this or more since he came). His goals got us to the group stages at least once and possibly twice by scoring the winning (our only) goal in the playoff.

He may well have had one eye on the door because basically every single transfer window there was numerous links with other clubs and our CEO at the time named his price for his departure. I already mentioned he was flawed and he is not alone in being a player who regularly makes stupid mistakes which leads to his sending off. That is probably one of the reasons we where able to keep him for so long.

As for learning the language Kyogo still gets interviewed with an interpreter after 2 years despite coming from Japan where English is compulsory in schools and universities. Do you think that mob are raging at him. Some people take longer to learn a language whilst others learn but are not comfortable in speaking it all the time.

Much more creativity and workrate than both of them together.

Morelos scored some very important goals.....a few of them lead to us qualifying for the group stages of Europe.

Cantwell was described by Norwich fans as a creative player who is not mentally strong.

He has not delivered in an important game and until he does he will just be a player that turns in on against the dross of the SPL and lower ranked European teams.

Is our coaching just shite?  We don't half seem to bring in decent players, gradually turn them into puddings, and then move them on where they start playing well again (well, some of them).

We play some turgid football at times grinding out results and even when it can be 3 or 4 nil at the end the majority has been dull. Along comes what seems a half decent player and before he has even contributed to a significant event such as winning a cup they are lauded, talked about as going for 15 Million or player of the year before their eventual slide into just another player who shows it in flashes.

Our tactics seem to consist of spending more than the rest of the SPL barring them and hoping that will win us games. Sadly those tactics seem to involve a lot of crosses.

  10. No doubt we will be involved in a lot of turgid games in the league this season so having him at least as one of the 5 subs to come on and at least try something different other than relying on a Tav set piece, corner, penalty or cross would be good

I really don't know where Hagi is right now in terms of starting games and played very little minutes in preseason so I don't think shoving him in on Wednesday is the best idea.

However statstically Hagi shows up. Even when you compare him to someone like matt o'riley at celtic. In the league Hagi has a goal involvement for us every 156 minutes compared to o'riley who has one every 155 minutes for them.

His numbers in Europe stand up to what they are domestically as well.

He has played 23 league games over the last two seasons with 5 of them being as a sub. Given O’Riley plays most weeks and thus contributes you can’t compare him to a player that plays on average 1 in 3 and contributes 1 in 6

Oh to still have someone like Jimmy Bell behind the scenes. We just don’t seem to have anyone around the club anymore who understands what is required to play for us, or the standards we need. I’m honestly scunnered with today. Could see it in pre-season. People said those games don’t matter and we’re for fitness and trying formations. Well we looked slow and leggy, and none of our setups worked. What is our style of of play? Aimless passing seems to be the Rangers style now.

We don't need someone like Jimmy Bell what we need is a manager who has a vision of how he wants the team to play. Also have a joined up thinking about what type of player we want along with the positions. We just seemed to have bought lots of forward players but Beale does not have a plan how to get the ball into them other than cross it. Mental to think today was crying out for someone like Arfield who could be a good shout to come on and change a game when the defence seems impenetrable.
