Lyon agree £13million deal to sign Gomis from St Etienne

Lyon coach Claude Puel has confirmed the imminent transfer of striker Bafetimbi Gomis will wrap up the club's close-season shopping spree.

Les Gones will take their summer spending to €70m once Gomis passes his medical on Thursday and signs a five-year contract with the arch-rivals of his current club St Etienne.

Since selling Karim Benzema to Real Madrid for €35m, Lyon have signed striker Lisandro Lopez for €24m, left-winger Michel Bastos for €18m and left-back Aly Cissokho for €15m.

Once Gomis signs on the dotted line for €13m, it will bring an end to Lyon's frenzied activity in the transfer market this summer.

"With the arrival of Bafe Gomis, our recruitment is completed,'' Puel told his club's official website. "There could be some adjustments within our team, but not in the scope of more arrivals.

"At the end of the season, I'd asked for the arrival of three or four players. There have been four of them; we have got what we wanted. Now the truth lies on the pitch.''

Gomis, 24 next month, was a member of France's squad in the ill-fated Euro 2008 campaign after finishing the 2007/08 season strongly.

But he was disappointing last term and struggled for goals as St Etienne narrowly avoided relegation.

He was not on Lyon's initial wishlist of strikers to replace Benzema but after they failed to sign Loic Remy and Andre-Pierre Gignac, the deposed French champions turned to Gomis.

"I didn't want to move for moving's sake, only for an ambitious club,'' Gomis said. "From the moment I know Lyon were interested in me, I didn't hesitate. Everything happened very quickly because there was a common desire to work together.''

Saw him a couple of times last season.

He never overly impressed me, not worth £13m anyway.

Not better than what Lyon already have.
