Coopermania 1
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/...-wage-bill.html Half a dozen will head for the Ibrox exit as Rangers look to lighten the wage bill By Peter Jardine Rangers hope to jettison up to six players to slim down Walter Smith's squad and cut the wage bill during the January transfer window. The Ibrox club signed eight new players during the summer and only Filip Sebo, Thomas Buffel, Carlos Cuellar and Daniel Cousin have moved on to pastures new. Fringe men Andy Webster, Dean Furman and Alan Gow were sent out on loan to England but effectively remain on the wage bill. Murray hints: Ibrox chairman Sir David Murray has said a number of players could be on the move as Rangers look to save money on wages Now a number of players are under threat with the absence of European football having cut demands on a squad who played a record 68 games last season. With the credit crunch also impacting on football clubs, Sportsmail understands Rangers are now looking to offload some of those who are not required. Midfielder Brahim Hemdani is a top earner and a prime candidate to be heading for the exit door, with Jean- Claude Darcheville another who could prove surplus to requirements come the turn of the year. Midfielder Burke faces a battle for a role in the Rangers first team Did Russian mafia pay Bayern to throw UEFA Cup semi-final against Zenit St Petersburg? Christian Dailly and Chris Burke are others who are out of contract in the summer, while there is an agreement in place with Blackpool that could make Gow's departure permanent for a fee of around £250,000. Others such as Webster and Steven Smith, who is still out injured, could find it difficult to retain a meaningful future. Weir getting on: 38-year-old defender David Weir could be facing the Ibrox axe. David Weir is under contract until next summer, by which time he will be 39, and finding a long-term replacement for the Scotland veteran looks the only significant impending 'gap' in the squad. Saving wages is important to Rangers given the £12million hole in the budget following the Champions League exit to FBK Kaunas and there might even be a case for selling the likes of Andrius Velicka or Lee McCulloch. Chairman Sir David Murray has made it abundantly clear that there will be costcutting. 'It is important to look at all costs in running the business going forward,' Murray said in his recent annual report. 'Existing levels of expenditure can't be maintained in the current economic climate and, as we look to the future, it is becoming more important to focus on the development of young players to ensure the long-term sustainability of the club.' My question is, how can young players develop if you don't bleed them gently into the first team over a period of time ?

Walter's preferred option of going for experience, will imo make this very difficult. I cannot remember the last youth player that Rangers brought through to be a success with our first team whilst Walter was manager.
Canadaready 9,437
It mentions selling Andrius Velicka Why even sign him in the first place?
Nemesis 277
I am not sure that Walter is gonna get an option on this Drop the dead wood, replace them with fresh talent from the Unders and it's a win win situation I'm just stunned it's took so long for the penny to drop

mark_ni 12
we should have got rid of a couple of them in the summer. People like hemdani who is probably on £20k+ a week and is not going to kick a ball all season unless we get injuries. I cant believe no team would have wanted to take him. We should have been getting a small fee for him but even if we let him got for nothing it would still be saving us a few hundred thousand in wages over the next few months.
