Madrid's hunt for a number 9

Marca ran a story on the possible replacements for RVN today. I couldn't directly paste the translation in as my browser was acting up, but i've done it manually to the best of my ability and i've also added some personal assesments in.

Category A) The experienced option

Diego Milito

For -

Has hit 9 goals in 10 games for Genoa this season.

Has fantastic experience of La Liga.

Can play in the Champions League.

Against -

Price. Genoa would want big money for their talisman.

His identification with Genoa. If he left now the fans of the club he loves so much would surely turn on him.

He wouldn't be a cheap, experienced option. Is it worth paying possibly over 20 million Euro's for a player who is nearly in his 30's?

Hernan Crespo -

For -

Mourinho would be really keen to let him go.

The fee wouldn't be the highest.

Inter didnt register him for the Champions League.

He's always scored goals for every club he's played for, and Real Madrid need to replace RVN's goals!

Against -

Injuries. Crespo is 33 and has struggled with injuries recently.

Pippo Inzaghi-

For -

He has experience of playing at the highest level.

A proven goalscorer.

Pipita Higuain would compliment his style of play beautifully.

Eligible for the Champions League.

Against -

Would Milan let him go given how vital it is for them to win the league this year?

Would he even want to leave Italy?

Category B) The recognized, long term options.

Mario Gomez -

For -

He is of Spanish descent, his Dad hails from the Spanish speaking province of Granada. He wouldnt have much problems settling into the culture.

He can play in the Champions League

Stuttgart are willing to sell him in January and are expecting him to go. It wouldnt be a messy deal.

Against -

Flopped big time at the Euro's and has never truly done it the Champions League. Could he handle the pressures of playing for the biggest club on the planet?

Vagner Love -

For -

Speed! Vagner Love possesses tremendous speed, something that Madrid have been lacking.

The Russian league is over. CSKA would be more than willing to do business.

Eligible for the Champions League and has good experience of the competition.

Against -

He's a bit of a wanker really. He could very well hinder the development of the other South American's at the club with his party animal tendancies.

He starred in a Porno with a Brazillian model that leaked onto the internet. LOL.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar -

For -

He's still really young.

He'd easily fit with the rest of the Dutch contingent at the club.

He's eligible for the Champions League.

Against -

He's out injured for two months.

Would Ajax be willing to sell him in January?

Category C), the home solution.

Ricardo Oliviera -

For -

Playing in the Segunda Division with Zaragoza. He could be signed for a cheap price.

Is a proven goalscorer in La Liga.

Eligible for the Champions League.

Against -

Flopped miserably at the last big club he was at.

Like his Brazillian compatriot, Vagner Love, he is also a bit of a wanker.

Fernando Llorente -

For -

Is having a wonderful season and has just been called up to the Spain squad by Del Bosque.

He'd give Madrid another option. Think of a Spanish version of Peter Crouch, that's Llorente.

He's young, and is eligible for the Champions League.

Against -

He's not an out and out goalscorer. He's scored 17 in 95 appearences for Bilbao.

Inconsistant player. He also has an attitude problem,

He probably isnt ready for a move to a club like Madrid yet.

Category D), the exotic wager.

Nilmar -

For -

The Brazillian league is nearing completion. Internacional would be surely willing to talk.

He really is an unbelievable talent. When fit, he's literally unplayable.

Eligible for the Champions League.

Against -

He struggled to replace the likes of Wiltord, Baros and Fred at Lyon. After an impressive start, Nilmar flopped miserably.

His knee is in a terrible state. So bad that Nilmar will always have to be wrapped up in cotton wool when the smaller matches come around.

Vedad Ibisevic -

For -

He's arguably the most in-form player in Europe just now.

He's an intelligent lad, and speaks many languages.

Eligible for the Champions League.

Against -

He's unproven.

Hoffenheim don't want to sell him and he doesn't want to leave. It would take big money to get him.

Fernando Cavenaghi -

For -

He would adapt to the club seamlessly. He already gets on well with Gago, Higuain, Heinze and Saviola

Relatively cheap player who would be available for around £10M.

Has a fantastic record at Bordeaux. Is he finally living up to his potential?

Against -

Flopped in Russia.

Is known for his eccentric personality. He still goes regularly goes back home to Buenos Aires to hang out with the River Plate ultra's.

Is he that much better than Saviola?

So there you have it, God that took it's time. Who would you go for? Of course, the whole RVN injury thing is a journalists dream and there's going to be one load of nonsense written in the coming months. There's been other players mentioned today as well; Amauri, Detinho, Pizzaro Tevez, Zarate and Zaki are just some others off the top of my head. Whatever happens, January will be absolutely massive for the club

I've heard Zaki and Tevez mentioned so far.

But I'd just love to see Huntelaar there. The guy is phenomenal, he could score in his sleep. His all-round play is also criminally underrated.

Zaki would be a great move as well, I love the dude.

I know you're a big fan of Crespo, mate. Thoughts on him signing on at the Bernabeu?

Obviously a finisher in the Van Nistelrooy role, but the rest of his game isnt as good as RVN's.

My thoughts on Crespo get him fit and he wills core goals in La Liga its his fitness now thats the problem plus he is a short term solution prob best Real looking at a long term replacement

He'd be in there as well. I think Crespo is a brilliant player, a bit like RVN of old in terms of being a sublime finisher but 'passable' on his overall play. RVN's worked so hard on his other areas since his move to Madrid as you well know, I don't think Crespo could offer that.

But as a finisher, oh my God! Easily one of the best in our era.

Probably my favourite video of him, sums him up perfectly.

Yeah mate, that would be ideal. The thing is, Calderon wants Benzema, but he will only be able to get him at the end of the season. Madrid are just looking for someone to "tide them over" just now.

That's what you call precision!

Bergdolmo (i think?) got absolutely beasted for that second strike.

Andre Bergdolmo, the Norwegian Lee McCulloch - What the fuck's he doing in defence

But that 2nd goal is sublime, one of my favourite goals ever. Great link up from Crespo and how's about that for a header.

I'll cry if he ends up at Celtic, but that rumour is ridiculous anyway :)

Out of that lot, only Huntelaar is a feasable long term option imo.

Huntelaar would be good for Madrid in the long term. And with the rest of the Dutch contigent currently at Madrid, it really does make the most sense.

The main difference being that Bergdolmo has been a defender throughout his whole career.

As far as Madrid's number 9 goes, would Freddie Kanoute be a bad shout?

Watch the guy, he's just as bad as McCulloch. So slow, turns like a Sherman tank!

Big Eck tried to sign Bergdolmo to replace Amoruso. Ugh.

And DBBTB, that isnt a bad shout, although i reckon he'd be very hard to tempt away from Sevilla. Sevilla completely understand his situation with his religion and Kanoute has always been grateful for the way they cater to it. I reckon he'd only leave them for an English side.
