16 team SPL would leave a £20 million loss

The game is completly different now than it was 35 years ago though. As you said, the TV money now plays a much more important role, therefor these teams WILL have something to play from from february onwards. In those days, finishing 7th and finishing 12th wouldn't have been that different, whereas in a 16 team league now, it would be a substantial amount of money that would be the difference.

With 16 teams in our top division, the aim would be for Scotland to have more of an impact in Europe. We used to get 2 champions league spots, 2 Uefa cup spots and im sure a few years ago we had 3 teams in the Uefa cup as well. Celtic's failings in Europe over the last 5 years or so has cause scotlands coefficient to absolutley plummet as we have been the sole representatives, but hopefully we can get back to having several league positions resulting in European football.

It's not going to be a quick fix, but our league is currently one of the most boring leagues in Europe. It won't be long until we have to take another cut-price TV deal. Why wait for that to happen before making changes?

Would rather drop down to 10 teams for the time being.

Right now games against Hamilton, St Mirren etc all result in a decrease in attendances so why is bringing another 4 teams similar to them going to save our game ?

The idea of another 4 diddy teams entering the league and an increase in meaningless games does not sound good.

In a 16 league SPL could we not keep the split, and at the end of the season/start of next season the top half get a higher bonus than the bottom half. That would mean the meaningless games aren't so meaningless when they are playing for more money.

I'll tell you what would make our league more interesting, 16 teams. First and second CL spots. 3rd and 4th dependong on how many spots we have left Europa League. 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th have an end of season play off at for the final spot.

16th and 15th automatically down, 14th and 13th a two legged play off to see who stays up. Would be an exciting end to the season all round.

What would Dunfermline, Raith, Falkirk and Queen of the South bring to the party, apart from the novelty of some younger fans visiting new grounds?

Falkirk took points off Celtic last season and it's very likely that other so-called 'diddy' teams are going to do the same. In fact Hamilton took points off Celtic as well last season. Wait a minute, so did some other 'diddy' teams. crabflute.gif

At the end of the day these smaller clubs would only improve over time if given the chance, but they need to be given the chance or else we'll never know.

People throw in the less derby games argument, but if Dundee were back in the top flight again Scottish football would have one back.

I'm not saying these clubs will be challenging for the title or euro spots, but maybe they deserve the chance to at least try.

Those clubs may improve over time with the added income but there is obviously a limit as to how much. That added income will come from the coffers of the teams who currently fill the bottom six places, resulting in even more mediocre teams than we have in the top division now. The 10 team Premier Division came into being because the 18 team format was such a turn off for fans who had little interest in Clyde v Cowdenbeath or East Fife v Dumbarton.

The idea is great, the goal is a noble one, but at the end of the day, you still can't polish a turd.
