Thermopylae 15,286
Time will tell but I think over rated he was just in the right place at the right time in Barcelona
JamieD 18,940
He got rid of proven elite World Cup and champions league winners like Ronaldinho, Deco, Zambrotta and Thuram and replaced them with the likes of Busquets, a player from Guardiola's own B squad, whom many people still insist is crap, and Pique, a failed Man Utd player, turning a team that came a distant third in the league the season before into a team that won 6 straight trophies. What precedent is there for that in history? How can anyone not give him credit for making it the right place at the right time?

Well the flip side to that is the fact they finished 3rd the season before with the team built around ageing, past it players like Ronaldinho, Deco and Zambrotta and the number 1 rule of building a new squad is to get rid of the bad apples. So while it was a brave decision, it was the obvious one to get rid of them and build the team round a midfield that just won the Euros with Spain like a month before that. His achievements for Barcelona were brilliant, fair play to him but it's hardly silly to say he didn't arrive at Barca at the right time just when the 3 players on the planet were hitting their peak. I don't see how that's the flip side at all. He made the decision to get rid of those players. He made the decision to replace Ronaldinho's creativity with Xavi, who almost immediately becomes a near-consensus pick for one of the greatest midfielders of all time once he is given a role where he is the heartbeat of the team for the first time, instead of signing some like for like replacement for Ronaldinho. In the case of Xavi and Iniesta especially, I don't see how anybody looks at two players in their mid to late 20s become so influential so quickly and assume they just happened to peak that season without the manager's system and vision for their role being one of the main reasons. The 2008 Euros were won with a midfield of Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Marcos Senna and David Silva. Saying Pep's midfield won the Euros before he arrived is like saying Dick Advocaat won the league in 1999 with the attack that won 9 in a row, just because it shared a couple of the same players in a different system. You don't get to pretend the lack of Laudrup and McCoist is a minor detail Even after a great season for Barcelona, Man Utd were still favourites in 2009. It's just unhistorical to look back and act like their success was ready made.
