  5. Shittu rejects Rangers contract Defender Danny Shittu playing for Watford Shittu celebrates scoring for Watford last season Rangers have pulled out of a deal to sign Nigerian international defender Danny Shittu from Watford. The 27-year-old was in talks with the Ibrox club after his club accepted a bid of around £1.5m. But personal terms could not be agreed and Rangers have now ended their interest in the player. Celtic have also been linked with a move for Shittu and several English Premier League clubs have made enquiries about the centre-half. Shittu, who has 12 caps, joined Watford from Queens Park Rangers in 2006 and has previously had spells with Charlton and Blackpool. Earlier this month Rangers extended the contracts of defenders Christian Dailly and David Weir while Andy Webster has made his move to Ibrox permanent having initially been on loan from Wigan.
  6. 45 mins - PREUSSEN MUNSTER 0-1 RANGERS. It hasn't been a great first-half showing from Gers but 40 mins - Loose tries to level for Preussen but his effort loops behind with the aid of a deflection for a home corner and although the hosts can't make it count, the brilliantly-named Massih Wassey does force a good stop from Alexander moments later. 39 mins - Thomson is really lucky to stay on the park after a late challenge. He's made a few of them today and his over-enthusiasm could soon prove costly. 38 mins - It's a yellow card for home player Massimo Ornatello after a crunching tackle on Sasa Papac. He joins Thomson in the book, who was cautioned earlier. 36 mins - GOAL! It's the first goal of the summer for Rangers and Adam is the scorer. He rolls a cool penalty low into the bottom right-hand corner with his left foot and sends Buchholz the wrong way. 35 mins - PENALTY! Miller plays a clever ball through for Darcheville to chase and he gets to it ahead of Buchholz, who hauls him down. If this had been a competitive game, there's every chance the keeper would have been sent off. 26 mins - Rangers haven't really got going yet and their performance has been fairly low-key but Dailly tries to spark them into life with a long ball up to Darcheville, only for Buchholz to beat the Frenchman to it. 21 mins - Loose is the most prominent player on the park at the moment and he cuts back to Marius Sowislo, whose shot is scrambled off the line by Dailly at the back post. 18 mins - Back come Gers and Adam centres another corner, with Dailly nodding just over the upright after home keeper David Buchholz comes for the ball and misses. 17 mins - Preussen respond with a shot of their own after good build-up play by Loose but Neil Alexander holds the ball well. 16 mins - Miller and Jean-Claude Darchville link up well, with the Frenchman through on a goal and a last-gasp tackle all that stops him from getting his effort on target. 10 mins - Miller does well to win Gers their first corner and Charlie Adam swings it in, picking out Christian Dailly. His knock-down lands at David Weir's feet but he can't convert. 9 mins - Rangers are starting to find their rhythm now and Steven Whittaker knocks the ball upfield to Kenny Miller but he is caught offside. 5 mins - Julian Loose releases the ball from a tight angle and only succeeds in finding the side-netting. Preussen are the team coming forward more at present but they aren't doing much with their possession. 2 mins - Preussen win a free kick and although it deflects behind from 25 yards, the resulting corner again poses little threat. 0 mins - After almost three weeks of training, Rangers' first pre-season game is finally underway. The hosts kick off and quickly force a corner, which comes to nothing. PREUSSEN: Buchholz, Talarek, Ozkara, Capretti, Wassey, Loose, Lauretta, Sowislo, Kara, Ornatelli, Wissing. Subs: Joswig, Remmert, Wassey, Erzen, Backalorz, Dede, Scherping, Ivicevic, Pufal, Melzer. RANGERS: Alexander; Whittaker, Dailly, Weir, Papac; Beasley, Thomson, Adam, McCulloch; Darcheville, Miller. Subs: Robinson, Broadfoot, Fleck, Furman, Novo, Cousin, Webster, Boyd. Referee: Cetin Sevinc.

  8. Czech Republic defender Marek Suchy claims Rangers have shown an interest in signing him from Slavia Prague. The promising centre-half has been linked with a £2.5million move to Ibrox after impressing for Slavia in the past couple of seasons. Suchy is keen to play in a foreign league and is now waiting to see if Rangers manager Walter Smith comes in with a bid. "I know nothing specific," Suchy, who has previously been linked with Everton, told deniksport.cz. Not angry "I don't know the details, on the other hand I will not act like I know nothing at all. "My agent Pavel Vandas told me how things were and that Rangers are interested. But we have to wait and see how it will turn out. "I must say that I am tempted to play in a foreign league. I would like to taste football elsewhere. "If it works out, I would be happy to go to Scotland. "If I stay at Slavia, though, I will not be angry because I like it here and we still have a lot to play for, and I believe it will be a good season again." Source skysports. Did he play in the euro 2008?

  11. Fan zones for Rangers faithful Exclusive David Ottewell 7/ 5/2008 MANCHESTER will set up special `fan zones' - serving food and drink - when up to 60,000 Glasgow Rangers fans arrive for the Uefa cup final. The city is bracing itself for a tartan invasion for the showpiece match at the City of Manchester stadium in two weeks' time. Only 13,000 Rangers supporters have tickets for the game - but tens of thousands more are set to come to Manchester to soak up the atmosphere. It is estimated the number of coaches already booked to travel down from Glasgow would stretch 13 miles if laid bumper-to-bumper. Council chiefs and police say they are well prepared and have already earmarked Albert Square and Piccadilly Gardens for fan zones. There will also be live entertainment and Castlefield will host a series of three-a-side football tournaments for young people from across the city. The cup final - which will see Rangers take on Zenit St Petersburg, of Russia - is expected to be worth £5m to Manchester. Police predicted a peaceful event and called on pubs, bars and other businesses to open as normal. Pat Karney, the council's city centre spokesman, said: "It's going to be a fantastic busy day and we are making plans so that everyone can enjoy themselves. Ambassadors "There will be dedicated zones for the football fans. Fans will be ambassadors for their clubs and their cities, so our message to them is: please don't let down your home city. "Manchester is excellent at hosting major events and - just like the Commonwealth Games and major political conferences - we want people to welcome our visitors and enjoy the busy atmosphere." Chief Superintendent Gerry Donnellan, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "Manchester loves its football and we are delighted that the city is hosting this final. "Everyone is looking forward to hosting both sets of fans. "We are experts in policing major football events and we want the day to be as enjoyable as possible for supporters, residents and businesses. "Everyone in Manchester has a part to play in creating an enjoyable and busy atmosphere. We want pubs and hotels to be open and to be properly staffed so that we can give visitors a proper welcome." The council will also put up signs and shuttle buses to help fans with tickets get from the city centre to the stadium. Rangers fans are also being encouraged to stay in Glasgow, with the match due to be screened at their home stadium, Ibrox. What do you think? Have your say.

  17. City set for tartan invasion John Scheerhout 3/ 5/2008 MORE than 60,000 Scottish football fans will invade Manchester for the Uefa Cup final in two weeks - despite thousands of them having no tickets. Glasgow Rangers admitted that although they only have an allocation of 13,000 tickets for the showpiece final at the City of Manchester Stadium on May 14, up to 60,000 of their supporters would travel to the city. Another 13,000 tickets have also been sent to their opponents, Zenit St Petersburg, in Russia. The capacity at the ground will be just 44,000 for the game, which, according to the Scottish club's own officials, could see 43,000 Rangers supporters locked out. Rangers described it as a 'friendly invasion', but asked for entertainment and big screens to be laid on for fans. But Greater Manchester Police insisted there would be no big screens and said those without a ticket should stay at home. In 2006 a Rangers pre-season friendly at Bolton had to be cancelled on the advice of GMP after it was discovered more than 12,000 fans may have attended, despite an allocation of only 5,000 tickets. GMP has already identified known Rangers troublemakers, whose supporters not travelling south overland will fly into terminal three at Manchester Airport, while the Russians will land at Terminal One. Fan zones Supporters will be bussed into special fan zones in Manchester city centre: Albert Square for the Rangers supporters and Piccadilly Gardens will be the base for the Russians. Kenny Scott, Rangers' head of security and a former chief superintendent with Strathclyde Police, said: "We have 13,000 tickets approximately. It's clear from the demand that there's going to be a far greater number than that coming to Manchester. "It wouldn't be unrealistic to expect three to four times that to come to your city. "I don't think there's any threat to the safety of the city. "Clearly, it will be inconvenient because of an influx of 50,000-60,000 people coming into the daily lives of those who live in the city and that is going to cause an amount of disruption. "But this is our ninth away tie in Europe this year and we have taken thousands of people across the continent. We took 20,000 to Barcelona alone and we have had no arrests. "That says something about the behaviour so far of our supporters. Enjoy themselves "Let's not tell any lies. Our supporters like to enjoy themselves and like to drink, but they have not been associated with violent disorder. They like to party and enjoy themselves and, hopefully, Manchester can look forward to a friendly invasion from Scottish supporters. "If you are going to have a huge influx of visitors to your city for whatever purpose, you want to make sure that their time is employed in a positive way. "The traditional way, when Uefa organise finals like this, is to create fan zones. If I was asked what should be done, I would suggest some areas being set aside, perhaps for a big screen, other entertainment and refreshments. That's the tack I will be taking up with people today." The former police officer made his comments before going into a meeting with officials from Greater Manchester Police, Uefa and Zenit St Petersburg. GMP Chief Superintendent Gerry Donnellan repeatedly answered queries about arrangements for ticketless supporters by saying: "If you haven't got a ticket, don't come." He added: "We have been planning for almost 12 months and we have liaised with our colleagues at Strathclyde Police. It is a world-class event and we want to make sure it's policed in a world-class fashion. We are confident with our plans and they will be revised over the next 13 days. "We have identified risk supporters who may be causing us problems as supporters. I want genuine fans to come here to have a good time and don't spoil it for everybody else." The Sports Editor of the Glasgow Evening Times, David Stirling, said there could be as many as 100,000 Rangers fans descending on Manchester. He said: "The fans want this to be the party of all parties. "Asking those without tickets not to travel will fall on deaf ears so they need to be accommodated with screens and drinking areas. "The authorities need to accept they are coming because Scottish fans travel expecting not to get into the match. Authorities "So if there is something organised then they will go to it because they will all want to be together." Zenit, who were recently rocked by claims of being racist after manager Dick Advocaat confessed his club have no black players because their fans would never accept them, arrive in Manchester a week before United fans jet the opposite way to Moscow for the Champions League final. And Manchester's hotel boss also predicted the flood of fans heading to Manchester will provide the city's hotels with a 'huge challenge'. Stephen Miles, chairman of the Manchester Hoteliers Association, said: "As it is, that week is one of the busiest on the corporate calendar and I know that occupation is already at 70 per cent throughout Manchester Hotels. The Radisson Edwardian, for example, is fully booked. "We have had calls from Scottish media asking if the city can cope with the 100,000 fans they believe are heading our way. I think the truth is that many will only head here for the day and others will have to stay in cities around Manchester like Leeds and Liverpool. But it will be a huge challenge." Pubs, bars and clubs are also gearing up for the Glaswegian invasion. Phil Burke, spokesman for the Manchester Pub and Club Network, said: "We have been preparing for this since last August. We have always known it was going to be incredibly busy in the city on that day. "We have special measures in place to deal with all the fans, many of whom won't have tickets, and we have all been working very closely with the police to make sure everyone can enjoy themselves in the right kind of atmosphere. "There is no police force better prepared or experienced at dealing with this kind of huge outdoor event than GMP and we are all looking forward very much to the day - it could be very good for everyone involved." What do you think? Have your say.
