  3. The next two or three weeks will be critical in the history of Liverpool Football Club. Speculation over whether owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are committed to Liverpool or will sell the club to Dubai International Capital has reached fever pitch. Gillett and Hicks may not own Liverpool for much longer But whether the owners are Hicks and Gillett or DIC, it is vital that Liverpool are able to build a new stadium and still have funds to go into the transfer market. Otherwise they will not be able to compete with Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea. And that is exactly what is concerning the supporters, the players, the ex-players and anyone connected with Liverpool. Should Liverpool stall now, it would be so counter-productive for the future of the club. It is essential that a new stadium is built in the near future. At the moment Liverpool have attendances of about 44,000 at Anfield and they cannot compete with Manchester United, who pack in about 76,000 at Old Trafford. However, the worrying thing is, if Liverpool's new stadium is going to be financed by debt, that could mean cash flow is stifled and new players cannot be brought in. Liverpool fans want to know that is not going to happen. The club did really well in the 1970s and 80s because they were successful on the pitch, the punters turned up en masse, the club made money and invested in better players. That in turn brought more success... and so the cycle went on. Although there has not been a Liverpool manager since then who has not had any money to spend, perhaps they have not had quite enough. It is imperative that the ownership situation is sorted out quickly one way or another Alan Hansen You have to put total faith in your manager, if you feel he is the man to take you forward, and back him with money. And to be successful in the modern game requires lots and lots of money. It is a simple as that. Gillett and Hicks could defend themselves by saying they have given Rafael Benitez money to spend on new players. Fernando Torres came in at the start of the season at a cost of £23m, and Benitez laid out £45-50m in total during the close season - although some money was recouped through players leaving. But at the moment, the fact remains that Liverpool are a bit short of where they want to be. I have met Gillett and he is a very, very affable character. I had dinner with him in July and he was so enthusiastic about Liverpool that I was really impressed. But after all that has gone on, with the approach to Jurgen Klinsmann to replace Benitez and doubts about the American owners' long-term commitment to Liverpool, he and Hicks need to clear the air and be seen at Anfield. They must make it absolutely clear that they are in it for the long term, if that is the case. If they are not in it for the long term, and they receive a reasonable offer from DIC, then they should sell up. Especially if DIC can guarantee that it can make funds available for a new stadium and also provide funds for new players. The vast of majority of people will want what is best for Liverpool - whether that is Gillett and Hicks or DIC remains to be seen. But it is imperative that the ownership situation is sorted out quickly, one way or another. It must not be allowed to drag on. Alan Hansen was talking to Ian Hughes

  6. Dubai International Capital - the investment arm of the Dubai Government - is to launch a £500m bid to buy Liverpool Football Club. BBC Sport understands the offer is in the process of being made to American co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks. DIC was originally thought to be ready to make an offer for Hicks' 50% share, despite his insistence that he is unwilling to discuss a sale. But DIC is now poised to make an offer for the complete buy-out of the pair. DIC were close to buying the club in January, but pulled out when Liverpool moved into advanced negotiations with Hicks and Gillett. But Gillett and Hicks' reign has caused turmoil on and off the pitch at Liverpool, and DIC have always maintained their interest despite the collape of the previous deal. Gillett and Hicks are currently attempting to finalise terms on a £350m loan that would enable them to repay money borrowed for their £219m takeover, repay loans used to sign players, and enable them to start work on a re-scaled plan for a new stadium in Stanley Park. DIC's offer will be made swiftly to present the American duo with a get-out clause before they take out the massive loan. Hicks, in particular, is under pressure after being subjected to heavy criticism from fans following public disagreements with popular manager Rafael Benitez, and his public admission that talks had been held with Jurgen Klinsmann about possibly succeeding the Spaniard. And Liverpool fans will turn up the heat on Gillett and Hicks with an orchestrated protest at Monday night's game against Aston Villa. Website Reclaim The Kop issued a statement claiming they were "not fit to be associated with our club" and banners criticising the Americans and calling on DIC to launch a bid were held aloft on The Kop during the FA Cup win against Luton. Liverpool supporters are also concerned at how much of the £350m loan will be shifted on to the club's books - with crippling interest payments. A spokeman for the Americans said on Thursday: "Any suggestion Hicks and Gillett are contemplating a sale of the club or any portion of it is categorically untrue." DIC backed away from a £150m price tag for a 15% stake in Liverpool last October, but the financial uncertainty surrounding the club has increased and there is hope a new offer will prove more tempting.

  15. Stevie Smith and Andy Webster are poised to end their long injury absences by returning to competitive action with Rangers' reserves. Left-back Smith has been sidelined for more than a year with groin and stomach muscle injuries. But the 22-year-old played in a bounce game this week against Motherwell. Central defender Webster has played just once since picking up a knee injury last January, shortly after arriving on loan from Wigan Athletic. The 25-year-old returned in October, scoring against Gretna, was sidelined by an ankle injury but then required a second operation on his knee. MY SPORT: DEBATE Really hope Smith becomes the player he promised to be before his injury onlyger@ There were fears that Smith might be forced to retire through injury despite operations to solve his pelvic problem. But Rangers have stressed that "finally, he seems to be clear". And he and Webster could now face Kilmarnock's second string on Monday great news about stevie coming back
  16. Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks says he held talks with Jurgen Klinsmann in November about taking over as manager in case Rafael Benitez left the club. Mixed performances and a row with Hicks and co-owner George Gillett on transfer policy put Benitez's position in doubt. "We attempted to negotiate an option as an insurance policy... if Rafa left for Real Madrid or other clubs rumoured, " Hicks told the Liverpool Echo. He added: "Or in case our communication spiralled out of control." Hicks was alluding to the criticism of Hicks and Gillett by Benitez over their transfer policy which angered the American duo and put the Spaniard's position in jeopardy. 606: DEBATE Will Rafa Benitez survive this latest revelation? Klinsmann's services have now been secured by Bayern Munich and he will take over the German club at the end of this season. The confirmation of talks between Klinsmann and his bosses will come as a blow to Benitez, although Hicks said the negotiations took place in November when the club were in danger of going out of the Champions League at the group stages and suffering indifferent league form. Liverpool needed a 4-1 win over Marseille in their final group game on 11 December to book their place in the knockout stages. The American owners and Benitez had clear-the-air talks after the Premier League loss to Manchester United on 16 December and Hicks now insists the Reds manager has their full support. "After George and I had our long and productive meeting with Rafa following the Manchester United match, we put all of our issues behind us and received Rafa's commitment that he wanted to stay with Liverpool," said Hicks. "We never reached agreement on an option with Jurgen, and we are both pleased for him that he has a great opportunity to return to Germany and coach a great club team. "Rafa has both of our support, and our communication has greatly improved." But Liverpool's form has not improved and they are currently 12 points off the top of the Premier League table. They were knocked out of the Carling Cup by Chelsea and have been taken to a replay by struggling Luton in the FA Cup third round.
