Let’s work together

Craig Whyte would be prepared to work alongside rival bidders Dave King and Paul Murray to make Rangers the dominant force in Scottish football, SportTimes can reveal.

Whyte’s attempt to take over the Ibrox club hit a major stumbling block this week when it emerged that club directors King and Murray were fronting a consortium interested in buying Sir David Murray’s majority shareholding.

However, the Motherwell-born venture capitalist, who is still the preferred bidder, would be prepared to join forces with the duo if their willingness to plough £25million into the Ibrox club is genuine.

Current club owner Sir David has confirmed his support for the Whyte bid rather than the £52m alternative plan put together by South Africa-based multi-millionaire King and Paul Murray.

The consortium members have discovered their plan is not seen as an attractive alternative to the bid put in place by Whyte.

But Whyte himself would be receptive to an approach from King and Paul Murray.

That potential pooling together of resources was described by one source close to the talks as potentially “the best of both worlds”.

It would mean the entire debt to Lloyds Banking Group would be paid off, Sir David Murray would get a sum for his 85% share-holding, and new manager Ally McCoist would get far more to spend on new players.

But it is unclear if King, Paul Murray and their backers would put money in if Whyte is the new owner.

As things stand, Sir David Murray regards Whyte’s £52.5m overall package – including £25m on players over five years – as the best option.

Crucially, that is also the Lloyds view. The bank would recover all of the near-£20m it is owed if Whyte’s bid goes through.

The King/Murray consortium proposes to repay only part of the debt and continue a credit facility with Lloyds.

King would put up £25m, of which £15m would go to Lloyds and £10m on players with a share issue then made which would be underwritten to the tune of £20m by the consortium members.

But Tuesday’s dramatic intervention by club chairman Alastair Johnston on behalf of the independent sub-committee of Rangers’ directors – which was set up to examine the credentials of any bidder – caused unexpected problems for Whyte.

The statement openly criticised his bid and announced the existence of the alternative proposal backed by King and Paul Murray.

That revealed to Whyte that if his takeover goes ahead, it will be contrary to the wishes of most of a board of directors including Johnston, chief executive Martin Bain, finance director Donald McIntyre, former chairman John McClelland and John Greig.

That would mean Whyte putting his money in and it going into the hands of executives who had not supported him.

The likely scenario in that event would be Whyte replacing them with his own new executive team as soon as was realistic after taking ownership.

I think if it can work then it should definately happen! Whyte has always said this is not an ego trip for himself - its a proper business venture therefore if the extra money can be investment it seems a win win situation for everyone involved!

My only concern would be whether or not they can actually work together or not

It's all fair and saying bring them all together and invest more in the playing side of things, but we need to remember whats happend in the last 2 years, and be sure never to let that happen again. Yes, bigger transfer fees (so long as its paid there and then) and affordable wages, but none of this excessive wages and fees please.

IMO £20m right now would see us walk the league as it currently stands, can only wait and see though.

year free reign to d muir. :)

i doubt he will be investing.

it doesnt matter who, if their decisions are within Lloyds budget they can pretty much do whatever they want just now

under whytes ownership i doubt they'll have that power, every decision would have to be ratified by him, and bain etc might not be able to readjust to an owner like that

Holy shit! Imagine the 4 way ownership - Paul Murray, Dave King, Douglas Parks and Craig Whyte.

If they could all come to an agreement and work together in harmony we would be even more dominant.

If Whyte really does want to join forces then perhaps he's taken into account Murray's "Rangers should never be run by one man again" theory!

Just what we need - no clear ownership, decentralised decision making and constant power struggles.

Football is an egotistical business and one leader needs to take control.
