I don’t do walking .. and I won’t do talking

Says Gers boss Ally McCoist

BOARD GAMES ... McCoist finds himself torn between the new Ibrox regime and former club gaffer Walter Smith

HE trusts one man with his life.

The other he barely knows.

But Ally McCoist has told Charles Green and Walter Smith he wants no part in their showdown talks over Rangers future.

It’s glaringly obvious which side of the table boss McCoist would sit on if he was involved in the Ibrox power struggle.

But last night, in an exclusive interview with SunSport, he insisted he must take a step back for the overall good of the club.

He said: “I think discussions will happen now because Charles is very keen for it to happen. To be fair to be him, he’s not hidden the fact he’s open to dialogue with anybody. I’d imagine that will happen.

“But at the same time, I can’t get involved.

“The club as a whole is my issue. The players, the SPL and SFA — they are all my immediate issues.

“I just want what’s best for this club and its supporters. That has never changed through this and will not change. I need to concentrate all my thoughts on that and that’s exactly what I’ll be doing.

“The situation is only an awkward one if I allow it to be.

“Walter is a very intelligent man as everyone knows. Jim McColl is equally intelligent. They — with Charles Green — appreciate I can’t get involved in that side of things. It’s not my issue.

“I’m the manager of the club, not the owner. I do what’s best for the investors, players and the fans.

“If Charles and Walter want to talk — and I’m sure they will — then great. Dialogue and openness is vital if we’re to move forward as a club.”

McCoist himself held clear-the-air talks with owner Green but the dust appears to have settled there.

Discussions ... held at Ibrox

The Ibrox boss has returned to his family holiday in Portugal where he’ll stay while the boardroom talks are conducted. What McCoist urges, though, is that both parties get around the table as soon as possible.

He added: “I’ve had good meetings and conversations with Charles in the last few days. I also had a long chat with Malcolm Murray on Saturday.

“The message I’d want to get across is that everybody is appreciative of the fact there must be dialogue if we’re to move forward, and more importantly if the club is to move forward.

“There has to be dialogue, whether that’s between Walter and Charles, the SFA and SPL, Jim McColl and myself, as soon as possible. Let the meetings and discussions start now.”

Rangers are in danger of seeing all their players leave for free. Union reps at PFA Scotland believe the new club has no hold over anyone who doesn’t want their contract to transfer across from the now defunct Rangers.

McCoist admitted: “I’ve no idea what the players are thinking and I’d be lying if I told you otherwise.

“I’m due to have conversations with a couple in the next day or so. I just need to touch base and let them know where we are and keep them up to speed with what’s happening.

“Again, though, these are issues I just don’t know about. It’s not through a lack of trying to find out. We just don’t know.

“There is talk of things like the TUPE regulations and players being allowed to leave for reduced fees.

“The signing embargo has still to be discussed again by the SFA’s second panel.

“There are still some major issues to develop and hopefully sort out. But, listen, we’re well up for it.”

The off-the-field strife has taken its toll on McCoist. It’s little wonder given everything that’s gone on, but the situation hasn’t beaten the 49-year-old and is unlikely to.

Asked if he was more positive about Rangers’ future than he was previously, he added: “I am slightly more positive than I have been, but let’s not kid anyone on. I’ve said that 10, 15, 20 times now in the last year.

“I think my optimism and positivity have certainly been put to the test in the last 12 months. But that positivity is something I think it is important to have.

“The support need to hear that from me. More importantly they need an honesty from me which they will continue to get, always. I can absolutely reassure them of that.”

A standing ovation as he entered Ibrox for the creditors’ meeting which sealed Gers’ fate last week was a humbling moment for McCoist and served as a reminder of why the club means so much to him.

He added: “If ever it did go to the back of my mind, and I can promise you it never has, what that did was remind me where my duty lies.

“That’s representing those fans in the best way I can, to the best of my abilities. I can guarantee that will never change.”

Alistair McCoist MBE is one of the greatest ever Rangers. He's up there with the best there has ever been. I can't put into words how happy it makes me feel knowing that he's the manager of Rangers Football Club. He's handled every attack, every unjustice and every obstacle that has came his way throughout this whole saga with resolve, strength, integrity, respect and dignity.

I'll be certain to have a special tear run down my face when I tell my grandchildren of the legend that was Super Ally and how his love for the red, white and blue shone through brightest from the skies above Edmiston Drive during the Club's darkest hour, albeit excluding the two Ibrox disasters. He embodies every victory, every goal, every cry, every tear and every smile that this wonderful football club has provided, and continues to provide, to us all, The Rangers Family. We will never forget how loyal you've been to us all and, most importantly, to Rangers FC.

Thank you, Ally.

Coisty is a true Rangers man. He also is very adept at handling the, mostly idiots in, the media.

I can't help but imagine some of the quotes we'd be getting right now if Big Jock Wallace was the manager through these turbulent times. I'd surmise a few classics would have been on offer. We may also have seen a few dead journalists!!!!

Two big Jock classics:

The Spanish police did what was natural to them. The Rangers fans did what came naturally to them.

I was confident before it started, son.

We now need our 'battle gear' more than ever.
