Hugely popular video game Halo 3 is due for a September debut, Microsoft has announced.

The September release date is earlier than expected and will help Microsoft in its drive to make the Xbox 360 console the gaming machine of choice this Christmas.

Halo 3 is the final instalment of the video game that has been crucial to sales of Microsoft's Xbox.

A trial version of the online portion of the game was released on 16 May.

The game is set to be on shop shelves on 25 September in the US and one day later in Europe. No word has been given on when it will be available in Japan.

Microsoft has only released information about US pricing. The basic game will cost $59.99 (£30), a limited edition for $69.99 and a legendary edition for $129.99. It is likely that European prices will be higher than direct exchange rate conversions suggest.

The Halo series of games are first-person shooters which detail the ongoing conflict between humans and the Covenant - an alliance of alien races.

Halo 3 has been likened to a blockbuster movie and continues the conflict on Earth which has been conquered and is now controlled by the Covenant.

Like many console games it has a multi-player section that allows players to take each other on in a variety of settings. In mid-May the first three multi-player maps were released to players in a beta test of the Halo 3 game.

In the multi-player games, players use weapons and vehicles to win battles or achieve strategic objectives, such as capturing flags or defending territories.

The first Halo was launched with Microsoft's Xbox in November 2001.

More than 2.5m copies of the Halo 2 were sold on its day of release - with sales of more than $125m.

Microsoft has said that this year's Christmas season will be "critical" in its ongoing console war with rival Sony.

"They don't really have an answer to Halo 3," Shane Kim, head of Microsoft Game Studios told Reuters.

Microsoft has pitched the release of the game as one of the biggest entertainment launches of the year, comparing it to the new Harry Potter book and the movie Spider-Man 3.

This is only beta and it's already fantastic, it's so beautiful, it runs so smoothly...

I never was a big fan of the Halo-games, but this is... wow :)

Not a fan of halo tbh. Infact not a fan of FPS's on console's at all. PC is the king of the FPS.

Consoles will never over take PC's in the power and capability department. You could get better graphics on a pc 6 months ago than you can get on a Xbox the now. PC's will always three steps ahead of any console.. In a years time the PC will be miles ahead of the fatbox and ps3. Thing's just move too fast in the computing world.

he is right - next year, with vista and dx10 when theres a good graphics card and a quad core processor will wipe the floor with the ps3 and xbox.

the only problem is - price. i dread to think the cost of the above rig, even a year from now. so pc's always will have power, but for a price.

but, really, you can have the biggest and best processor, the fastest graphics and physics cards, and the top of the range operating system - but its all down to the games. sensible world of soccer, in full 64 colour glory on an amiga 600 still beats pro evo and fifa hands down for sheer playability. not bad for a 15 year old game.

anyway, as for halo 3, were in for a treat. the other 2 games were nothing short of fantastic, and if this one is as good then i'll buy it in a minute.

Bang on.

PC's will continually wipe the floor with consoles until the console is granted the ability to upgrade.

Unforuntately, that won't happen any time soon. PCs have always been and will always be the most powerful and fastest platform for games.

You lot actually think the PS3 and Xbox360 are already playing games at full strength ? :craphead:

It'll be at least a year before PC's get cheap enough so that people who don't want to spend €2000 on a computer can also play games at full strength.
