SECOND WIN FOR THE UNDER 17S

Thursday, 20 Mar 2008

Scotland U17s recorded their second win the the Elite Round of the UEFA U17 Championships by beating Wales 1-0 at The Showgrounds in Newry, Northern Ireland, last night. The win puts Scotland at the top of the table with one match to play against Slovenia on Saturday.

The Young Scots were hoping that they would be able to start this game in the same manner as the Northern Ireland game 2 days earlier but they found the Welsh in no mood to give ground. It was a disappointing first half for Scotland and they may have gone behind against Wales when Dean Hodson hit a spectaculative cross that deceived Grant Adam ( Rangers) in the Scottish Goal but came back off the post and rebounded to saftey. It was an end to end match without any team dominating.

The second half started off brightly for the Young Scots but they could find no way past Daniel Hanford (Rochdale) in the Welsh Goal. Just when it looked like the game would end in a draw, substitue Paul Robinson ( Heart of Midlothian) dispossessed defender James Bloom (Cardiff City) wide on the right and his cross found Archie Campdbell ( Rangers) who powered the pass into the net from 16 yards in the 70th minute. This goal gave Scotland the 3 points to keep them top of the table.

Coach Ross Mathie said, "It was not a great performance and Wales made it very difficult for us but it was a very hard working performance from the team that secured us the three points. We now sit at the top of the group with 6 points after two games. It will be difficult in our final game against Slovenia on Saturday but we know that a draw will put us into Finals in Turkey."
