Rangers won't pay off fringe stars to cut wage bill,

WALTER SMITH insists cash-strapped By GAVIN BERRY Rangers won't go down the road of paying fringe players off to cut the Ibrox wage bill.

The Ibrox boss knows he can't bring anyone in during the transfer window until he gets some out the exit door.

Smith has even gone as far as to say his fed-up fringe players are unsettling the club's title challenge. But it's raising funds fromtheir sales and saving money on their wages that are the biggest issues.

Alan Gow looks like sealing a move to Wolves and Smith must hope the likes of Brahim Hemdani, Christian Dailly, Charlie Adam, Stevie Smith, Chris Burke and Andy Webster can also attract clubs.

However, if they don't find new teams gaffer Smith admitted the club won't pay them off like former flops Dragan Mladenovic, Emerson, Nuno Capucho and Christian Nerlinger.

Asked if similar deals could be made with fringe players now, Smith said: "No, they'll stay until the end of the season if they don't get the moves they want."

Smith takes his team to the Highlands today with struggling Inverness equally as desperate for maximum points as Gers who are looking to bounce back from last week's defeat to Celtic.

The Ibrox boss expects a tough match and hopes his troops don't suffer an Old Firm hangover.

He said: "Inverness are in a hard situation too so both clubs really need to make sure they get a win.

"We have put ourselves under pressure with last week's defeat to Celtic and this will be a difficult match given the respective situations.

"There was a disappointment among the players at training for the first few days after the Old Firm game but it's not something to dwell on.

"We have to go on to the pitch on Sunday and show we have no effect from that defeat. So far this season we've managed to come back from any defeats immediately - although Inverness will be a difficult place to do that."

Rangers have struggled on the road this term with defeats to Hearts and St Mirren and draws at Aberdeen and Dundee United.

Smith reckons his side have played well in some of those matches but just lacked a bit of creativity.

Asked what the problem has been he said: "It's not just one aspect. At Paisley we had all the possession but hardly created any chances until the last few minutes and lost 1-0.

"At times our defending is excellent then there has been a bit of slackness.

"In some games we haven't created so it's about getting a better balance."
