http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/foo...icle6884551.ece Most people, including Alastair Johnston, the new Rangers chairman, and Walter Smith, the manager, as well as the media and many Rangers supporters, knew that the Ibrox club was in crisis. But after Tuesday night’s gruesome 4-1 defeat at home to humble Unirea Urziceni in the Champions League, few of us were aware just how bad things were for the Scottish champions. This is no knee-jerk reaction, and Tuesday at Ibrox was no freak result. Rangers were alarmingly outplayed by a side that will not make any great imprint on the Champions League this season. Some people now speak of “the curse of Rangers”, what with the various ailments, both on and off the field, that have dogged the club in recent years. As if the gods need to rub more salt into the wound, Maurice Edu, Rangers’ black midfield player from the United States, complained on Twitter yesterday of being “racially abused” by two Rangers supporters as he left Ibrox after Tuesday’s humiliating defeat. Too much can probably be made of this Edu incident. Goodness knows, Rangers wrestle with a problem of prejudice among a section of their support, but racism of the sort that Edu experienced is not something regularly associated with Ibrox. Related Links The incident, however, only added further embarrassment to a cruel week for the club. Rangers were pitiful on the park against Dan Petrescu’s little Romanian club. The home side’s defending became an eyesore, but the worst of it was the physical and mental sluggishness that seemed to thwart Smith’s side at every turn. By comparison with their opponents, Rangers appeared laboured in mind and body, and all this lent itself to the humiliation that was shrieking out from the Ibrox scoreboard after 90 minutes. Smith spoke recently of the inherent danger of Rangers and Celtic being “dragged down” with the rest of Scottish football unless the two clubs escape to play in England or elsewhere. Regardless of any imminent change in the footballing landscape, on Tuesday night you felt that the sinking of Rangers was already well under way. Where does the club go from here? It is a painful question to answer. But two subjects — that of Walter Smith’s future, as well as the issue of who might buy Rangers — are now coming starkly into focus. Someone said to me yesterday, “Walter is set to quit”, but I don’t believe so — not just yet. Smith, however, looks more and more likely to walk away from this Rangers mess in the summer, rather than plough on with little money with which to improve the team. At 61, and having done a good job over the past three years, Smith could do without the angry baying that came his way from a disgusted Rangers support two nights ago. Yet in this context the Rangers manager cannot be regarded as any innocent. Smith has received justified praise for the job he has done since replacing Paul Le Guen — a title, some cup wins and a Uefa Cup final have all been quite a feat. Yet the current team is of Smith’s making — based around players like Kenny Miller, Kyle Lafferty, Lee McCulloch, Steven Davis and others — so the Rangers manager cannot be immune from criticism. Davis, in particular, was woeful against Unirea. For someone who cost £3.5 million the 24-year-old has an unnerving habit of lacking any influence in such games. The Northern Ireland player is the perfect embodiment of where Smith and Rangers appear to be going wrong right now. Meanwhile, the club is crying out for a new owner to come in, but from where? The rumour persists of Graeme Souness and others being interested in stepping in and taking over Sir David Murray’s 90 per cent shareholding, but all of this remains hazy and unsubstantiated. What is for sure is that the current uncertainty over Rangers’ ownership is sapping some of the energy out of the club. Rangers appear hamstrung. Murray wants out but no one wants in. The bank, while not “dictating Rangers” in the way that is often misleadingly claimed, nonetheless will no longer lend lavishly to the club, which means Rangers are having to drastically downsize. A tide of woe is currently washing over Ibrox and no one seems capable of stemming it. Smith, meanwhile, having done what he can, is unhappily preparing his exit strategy. Rangers now face two testing fixtures: against Hibernian at home on Saturday in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League, and then away to Dundee three days later in the quarter-finals of the Co-operative Insurance Cup. Frankly, for the restoration of its self-esteem, the club needs to win both games. Amid all this Ibrox angst, what Smith wouldn’t deserve is to be unceremoniously sacked, given what he has achieved. Football, however, deals in the here and now, which is why Smith somehow needs to get his stricken team back on track.

put davis in the middle with thommo and have naismith and novo on the wings but walter will play super lee -
You really think any income from sales will go to buying players? surelly if we sell bougherra for 8 million we could spend at least 4 million on 2 defenders
-
bougherra if he is out will miss another big game for us that why in january if a bid of 7 or 8 million i would sell him and bring webster back from dundee united and buy stranzl from spartak moscow for 1 million and bank the rest
