  1. As a nine-year-old in the early sixties I was taken by my older brother to Cathkin for a Third Lanark v Rangers game. That was the day prior to the game a gate gave way under crowd pressure. There were that many in the ground the crowd lined the pitch. My brother and I watched the game literally sitting on the touch line. Happy happy memory.
  2. Yes, that was the game Wee Bud sat on the ball. Only other thing I remember apart from the goal and the presentation was a shot from Colin Stein hitting the post and the ball running across the goal at the far away end. As for the celebrations, yes it we did enjoy it but for the younger bears, we had finished 2nd in the league four years on the trot and runners-up in three finals including the Cup Winners Cup. It was Willie Waddell's first full season 1970/71, first trophy and we thought we had turned the corner. Hard to argue we hadn't as Barcelona was the following season 1971/72
  3. Showing my age. Season used to start with League Cup with teams drawn in groups of four playing home and away. Winner of each group went through to quarter finals which were played in September. Semi finals early October and final at the end of the month. No idea why it was originally set up this way. Certainly remember in the mid to late sixties the Old Firm being drawn in the same group three years in a row.
  4. I hope you'll let me share a true story connected to that day we beat Hearts 4-0 in 1989. I was visiting my late father in the Victoria Infirmary that afternoon. We had a radio and knew it was going well for Rangers. The guy in the next bed to my father had a season ticket at Ibrox. This guy's wife was visiting him that day. As the visiting was ending she sobbed a little and hugged him saying "I wish you were home". Without a seconds pause he said "Ah wish Ah wiz at Ibrox"
  5. I think the guy between Niven and Davis is centre half Bill Paterson and the guy between Millar and Wilson may be left half Billy Stevenson. Believe it or not a copy of this photo used to be on my grandparent's living-room wall in the early sixties. Came across it a couple of years back and checking what history books I could at the time, my best guess is January 16th 1960 v Partick Thistle (Niven wearing track suit bottoms). Could be February 13th 1960 cup tie v Arbroath or March 1st 1960 v Aberdeen. Happy to hear from anyone who can narrow it right down.
  6. Impossible to measure just how much he gave us. R.I.P. Mr Struth.
  7. Would have to say Colin Stein. Three goals within four minutes of each other takes a wee bit of beating.
  8. Couldn't agree more. Stop telling us what it means to be at The Rangers, get oot there oan a match day and bloody show us.
  9. I witnessed something similar many years ago after a game v PSV at Ibrox. Last train from Glasgow Central to Ayr was about to leave when two young Rangers fans came racing up the platform got on and 'disappeared' through the next carriage. Seconds later a railway employee arrived with two Transport Police officers. The employee then "identified" two lads sitting across from me as the ones who had just got on. No matter how much we all complained these two lads were innocent (and it wasn't just football fans present) it had been decided these two lads, trying to get home to Ayr, were to be removed from the train. While not being arrested how were they to get home? "That's your problem" they were told. As our complaints became more heated I couldn't believe it when one of the officers said "Pipe down or I'll empty the f***ing carriage". To cut a long story short, complaints were made through the proper channels. I received a visit from the Lothian & Borders Police who were investigating the incident. Some time later I received a letter saying the officers had been reprimanded. Hopefully something similar will come of this but that's no great comfort to the two lads trying to get to Aberdeen yesterday or Ayr that night years ago.
  10. I've found that photo and would you believe there are FOUR Rangers goalkeepers in the photo. I'm new to this so have no idea how to post the photo. If you tell me how I'll be happy to oblige. And maybe someone will know the fourth choice keeper?
  11. Yes, my money is on Bobby Watson reserve goalkeeper. He was more like 3rd choice behind McCloy and Neef. I have a photo somewhere of the three of them standing together.
  12. Hang on a minute, didn't we have a reserve goalkeeper of that name around that tin=me ?
  13. Not sure who it is but definitly NOT Bobby Watson. Watson left Rangers in 1970 and this is 1971/72 season (John Greig with his Barcelona beard)
  14. I can't be the only one who heard it.
  15. I was driving to Ibrox at the time. It was Lee McCulloch who let a word slip during celebrations. Wee Chick interviewed him a few moments later where Lee apologised. At the end of the interview Wee Chick thanked him and commented how well Lee had done continuing with the interview while Alan McGregor was trying to pull his pants off. Lee replied "Aye, that's McGregor for ye, he's aye trying to get the pants aff somebody. And I suppose I better apologise for that one tae"
  16. No argument with anybody listed, but considering his position I would like to add Willie Johnston. I always fellt "something" was going to happen when wee Bud got the ball. If not scoring himself he would create something. Maybe one for another topic, Alec Willoughby who "done a Negri" at the end of 1966-67 season scoring 16 goals in 11 games (still a puzzle why he didn't play in the Cup Winners Cup final v Bayern Munich).
  17. Hi folks, new to all this but boy did this link take me back. Was thinking how powerful the Rangers influence was in the Scotland team back then. Particularly against England. Wilson scored in the 9-3 game in '61. Wilson and Caldow scored both goals in '62 and Baxter both goals in '63 (Henderson winning the penalty plus Wilson's performance at full back). Happy days. I have an old video called Scotland The Brave with highlights of the Scotland wins and it's brilliant to watch these guys.
