Except if the VAR bloke reveals what he advised to the ref and refuses to be silenced in the face of the furore, by going public, because to the the clear incredulity of it to the rest of the football world the VAR official is guilty here too.. Ends his career no doubt, but Sporting Integrity and all that......!

It is the rule changes that have completely fucked me up. I have no idea what is going on anymore decision-wise. Take the harry Kane incident against France...he was fouled outside the area. Had he been fouled inside the VAR-verified penalty area, VAR would have been able to call play back and a penalty awarded. Because VAR cannot retrospectively award a free kick, then the incredulous situation arose that because of where the foul had taken place, either nothing could have been awarded or a penalty. By inches. Bit of a difference. To be a supporter these days means having to scrutinise the rulebook more than ever before.
