Celtic set to offer Georgios Samaras new deal

Georgios Samaras has told Celtic he wants to stay

Celtic are ready to convince Georgios Samaras he is part of Neil Lennon’s long-term plans by offering the striker a new contract.

The Greek hitman dropped out of the starting XI at the weekend, with the manager preferring to go with new signings Anthony Stokes and Daryl Murphy.

However, Lennon sent Sami on in the second half, then took him aside after the 3-0 win to assure him he will have a big part to play this season.

Samaras’s contract is in its final year, and Spanish club Hercules and Italian side Palermo both tried to buy him during the summer.

But he came back from the World Cup determined to fight for his place, and was one of the best performers in the pre-season matches with four goals in five games.

Lennon has been delighted by his attitude, and is pushing ahead with plans to bring him in for talks to extend the contract he signed when he joined from Manchester City in a £1.5million deal in 2008.

Along with Murphy and Stokes, the manager also brought in Gary Hooper during the summer while allowing Marco Fortune to leave for West Brom.

But Samaras is a man Lennon rates highly and said: “Sami came to see us and said he didn’t want to go anywhere, that he wanted to stay.

“He has played well since he came back after the summer, to the extent we are probably going to talk about a new contract soon because we feel he has a lot to offer.”

Lennon accepts Samaras does not want to be considered an impact player, and watched him get frustrated as he passed up a couple of decent chances to score after he came off the bench at the weekend.

But Lennon insisted: “He was not under pressure to score. We know what he can do.

“He’d been away for two weeks playing with Greece, and, with Murph being fresh and having done well at Motherwell in our last game before the break, we just felt we would start with him again.

“Sami is a very good sub to bring on. After the game, I had a word with him and told him just to keep going because the goals will come for him.”

While the rest of the squad huddled together acknowledging the fans at the final whistle, Samaras stood alone at the mouth of the tunnel.

But Lennon did not read anything into this and explained: “He was just disappointed with himself. But he’s still only 25, and has a lot of good attributes.”

Lennon is still waiting to hear if defender Danny Shittu is prepared to come to Glasgow this week to prove his match fitness and discuss a contract. But with each passing day, Hoops’ hopes are receding.

Lennon is off his fucking conkers, how many players do u need for one position. If they had the diddy league to play on a Thursday then aye, maybe keep the odd surplus player but they're playing sat to sat this yr??!

Celtic strikers,

Stokes, samaras, murphy, hooper and possibly u could even play baloney up front aswell.

Can u not count lemon ya Fucking monkey, u can only play 11 players at a time lol. His poor understanding of mathematics must have summit to do with his childhood educational establishment

samaras is utter pish. Every now and then he does something good but his finishing is dire. He would be a 30goal a season striker if he could finish better, he gets into good positions and gets a hell of a lot of chances but he fluffs it most times. The more he plays for celtic the better as hooper and stokes are both decent finishers and will score more than samaras
